    We are who we are

This club is mid division in any of the divisions in baseball. They just lack that punch to turn around there season. Has not happened and probably won't with this club.

"To quote a wise old coach, you are what your record says you are."

    dumb cliche....

We've been ahead in the division this time of year several times and choked, our record was good.

Last year our record was ok and we won the world series.

This time around, we stink, worse than our record indicates.

What's more interesting than a "we are who we are" observation is for the team to figure out which young guys can play, which can't, which can be traded, which can't, and so on.

identity is not fixed and static. But- change is hard.

FOF, you are history. Next time you visit our site, please show a little more understanding that you are not allowed to come here just to stir the pot. If you want to come back in a few weeks and behave yourself like many of your Yankee fan colleagues, you are welcome to stay. For now, have a nice vacation.

That was my point. I don't know what FOF posted after me, but I never said they'd be better (or worse). A lot can happen over the next 3 1/2 months.

I accept that.  We're 31-37 with a -16 run differential.  The only way to show we're better than that is to play better than that.

But then there's the Yankees, whose record is 35-32 with a -22 run differential.   Their Pythagorean W-L says they should be 31-36.

Some teams aren't what their records say they are.  They are just lucky.  ;-)

That saying is appropriate for the NFL, when all you have is 16 games to show what kind of team you have.

To apply it to a 162 game baseball season is just dumb.

The great thing about baseball is that there are now so many stats available that you should almost certainly be able to find a couple that support your position.  But the bottom line continues to be wins and losses. In the end, that is all that matters.

Here is the bigger long-term question. Who replaces Ortiz in 2016?  Where will that power come from?  I don't want to be like the yankees are caught with their pants down trying to replace Rivera, Jeter, PEDitte, AROIDS, and Jorge all at the same time.  You take Ortiz off this team - or the projected team in 2016 - and they are just awful.  Makes the need for giving up top prospects for Stanton even more pressing.

Right, because it would be impossible based on a 162 game schedule. The Red Sox will be above .440 and below .530.
