Umm, the trading deadline is 4 days away.  Why is he seeing a back specialist NOW to determine whether his injury is something structural.  This should have been done a month ago.  It seems like the Sox are cutting this dilemma awfully close because if he's not coming back this season then the Sox NEED another starter.

I don't have much faith in some of the techniques or physicians the Sox use to diagnose an injury.  Regardless of whether Clay comes back or not we could use another solid starter.  Guys like Lackey, Wake and Miller in my opinion should never be handed the ball in a PS start.  I would trust Aceves before these three, so that leaves us in a position where our "top three" of Jon, Josh and Clay need to stay healthy.

We need a reliable fourth starter and not a guy that lives on the DL like Bedard and Harden.

My understanding is he feels fine, this is precationary being ordered by the Sox! This according to Tito!

I agree with both above comments....... No question this team is play off bound but we are only one more pulled muscle in Becket or Lester away from not getting past the first round.

Sure we win many games with scores like 10-2, but I am very worried about how many games we win 10-8.  Also we have clearly seen the last few seasons far too many times how we can score 10 runs one day and the next day struggle to score even one run in a close game.

IMO we need more realiable starting pitching because we never know each day if we can expect our line up to bang out 10 runs or struggle to score 1.

The problem is that Francona has become such a pathological liar that it's getting to the point where I am starting to believe the truth is the exact opposite of what he's telling us.

Yup - it used to be that the yankees relied on CC more than any other team relies on a single player.  Today, no team relies on a single player more than the Sox relies on Beckett.  We'd be heading into October w/ Beckett and a recovering Lester and Lackey and Wakefield with Miller as Plan B.  That's pretty reckless.  You don't come this close and let it go because maybe in 3 years you will wish you kept one of the kids you traded away.........

yeah, I'm with Jim. please tell us or give us a link as to where or when tito has become such a pathalogical liar.

and I agree with you Promise. tito said as clay starts to get more "aggressive" in his words, he just simply wants to get totally reassured that there is nothing down in his lower back that could be structural.

Re: WEEI: Red Sox "concerned" about Buchholz

We want Buch to see one more specialist, Friday-Monday-ish, before we completely turn him loose,’’ manager Terry Francona said yesterday. “Just because, again, he’s starting to get aggressive, and everything that’s gone on in there, we just want to make sure this kid’s OK.’’

Francona did not have any details about what doctor would examine Buchholz, saying team medical director Tom Gill was coordinating that. This would be at least the fourth opinion on Buchholz’s injury.

Buchholz has not pitched since June 16 because of what has been described as a muscle strain. He received a cortisone shot July 6 and on Monday threw off the mound for the first time since then.

The hope was Buchholz would progress from there. But now comes another delay.

“We just want to make sure we’re not doing something wrong here,’’ Francona said. “He had a really good day [on Monday]. It’s a lot to ask moving forward if he’s going to start pitching in games. We just want to make sure we do the right thing.’’

Francona said Buchholz had not reinjured himself, and that the Sox were encouraged by his arm strength on Monday.

perhaps pathological is a stretch but he is known to lie......haven't u been paying attention?  here are a couple of obvious ones:

    *  He claims that he tries to win every game - we know that is simply not true

    *  There was an issue earlier this year when a pitcher (Atchinson I think) was being added to the roster and Francona claimed that he Scott was seen in the locker room b/c he was just clearning out some of his stuff; Atchinson was in the pen that night; not picking up his belongings.....clearly a bald-faced lie.

hey TM50, long time no see, what's doin?...hope all is well, i think the Sox are just erring on the side of caution, the Sox need a healthy Buchholz, last thing you want is him laid up, then have Becks, Lester or even Lackey(again) get hurt in the thick of a race..

If the Sox aren't concerned, they aren't paying attention.  He's on the DL and they can't be sure when he will get off.  It's some kind of weird back thing that's apparently difficult to fix.

andrew,  scott atchinson was called up from pawtucket as a pre caution and emptive move. After Lackey threw his bullpen session, they determined his elbow was an issue. Had they waited, there wouldn't have been time to get him up from pawtucket. part of franconas job is to protect his players and the organization, not to make sure the media or the fans have all the information they want.

Re: WEEI: Red Sox "concerned" about Buchholz

For sure the Red Sox should be extremely concerned about Buch. He could very well be out for the year, or worse.... Some reports are mid-August at best, which would be 2 months down time, so he would not come back sharp as he hasn't even pitched a simulated game, rehab game. Sounds like both the Red Sox and Clay are almost afraid to air it out for fear of major long term injury.

Re: WEEI: Red Sox "concerned" about Buchholz

    Yeah, this one isn't good.

Other reports right now have the Sox looking closely at Eric Bedard as a replacement.  Ubaldo Jimenez, too, but that would cost some serious talent and/or cash.

It's possible that the Sox don't actually need to get a starter, but that would mean holding our breath every time Miller and Weiland pitch.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that we don't see Buchholz again this season.  At least not on the mound.

Sox in first place, Yankees need pitching, is Theo driving up the price for whats out there? Estimated time back was mid August, I just checked my calendar its still July and trade deadline is soon. Put nothing past the Sox, right now they do not need Buch. But they do need him healthy come September. I think it's a game they are playing and leaking stories!

What is wrong with you?  The Sox rely on their number 1 guys as much as everyone else.  Who do the Mets rely on?  The Rangers, Angels, etc.  Lackey will get a start in the post season.  You are gonna have to deal with that.

No excuse for a professional athlete to miss this much time becasue of a back injury--unless there is trauma or serious structural problems in the spine. I've had lower back pain my whole life--with occasion incapacitating back spasms. I got some simple advice from a PT and now do stretching and yoga. Done on a regular basis it will allow you to do strenuous exercise and stay in good shape. Any decent PT or sports medicine specialist could  give Bucholtz a routine to do year round that will enable him to pitch. And yeah, there may be some pain. This is what he's paid to do.
