Re: Werner calls out media, Globe, Shaughnessy for Ortiz column

Shaunessy never said HE thought Papi was using PED's.  He was asking the questions because his readers were asking the questions.  Of course plenty of folks are looking at Papi's numbers this season and wondering about it.  Was it fair to Papi?  yes and no.  Yes, because he didn't just write about the rumors or questions - he went straight to Papi to talk about it.  No, because it just serves to fuel the rumors and get more people thinking and talking about it.  Final analysis - the story did nothing for Papi except show he was willing to be interviewed about it without showing resentment for the insult...but it sure got Shaunessy a lot of attention.   I'll go on record saying I think Papi is not using.

Dan is not a reporter, he is a columnist. Big difference. Dan asked questions that most likely have crossed the minds of 50% of all baseball fans. Connect the dots and the questions are valid. Ortiz very easily could have nipped this in the bud with better responses. Ditto Werner.

to blame Dan for doing his job, having people like us talk about, comment on, and read the article, just doesn't make sense. It's one thing to not like Dan, it's another thing to say the questions weren't warranted, or asked improperly. Dans article is solid and fair IMO.

Oh please, Dan is just trying to sell more of his Red Sox book. Sales must be down, so he needed to get his name back in the headlines.

    In response to trantor's comment:

The press was laying down 15 yrs. ago??? They were reporting the findings of MLB which were done using chemical analysis tests. The role of the press in to report the news - not to make or fabricate the news. CHB isn't a chemist and can't analyze the blood and urine samples. His job is to report the results and not to speculate or guess, same goes for all of the media.

If anyone was lying down in the past it was MLB and the Commissioner. The press had nothing to do at all with the prevalece of the steroid era.

so I'll put you down as one who didn't think the  press

failed in the days of sosa & mcguire

and one who never heard of

    Investigative journalism

No one here was complaining when the only name leaked by the press of the 103 who failed the MLB administered test was Arod.

    In response to stapleton's comment:

The press had plenty to do with the prevalence of the steroid era.  They should have asked questions and brought the issue into the public sphere for thought and discussion...that's part of their job.  They did not.

And why don't you hold the political press to the same standards pike?

Sorry, but what Shaughnessy did doesn't qualify as 'investigative journalism'.  Anybody can walk up to a player and say 'Hey, big guy, you're off to a pretty hot start considering your age.  Have you been juicing?'

If CHB was a columnist who covered the Yankees, I still say that he doesn't have the right to go into the Yankee clubhouse and imply, face-to-face, to a player that he is using steroids or PEDs. He should have evidence and not merely speculate.

But you didn't feel that way until he turned on one of yours.

I'm not defending him. Considering the amount of testing going on imo he shouldn't have written the article.

But I think some of the outrage from some of the posters here is comical.

It's ok when it goes on as long as it's not one of ours.

And it's even better if it's a yankee.

Read some of the threads here.
