Lucchino is vindictive and probably has never been a big fan of Theo, so why not try and screw the Cubs and Theo. Everyone here in Chicago is saying the Red Sox hold all the cards, but if they can't come to an agreement, the Red Sox essentially have to pay Theo to go home and do nothing.

That would be a pretty expensive write off.

Ahh, but the great ownership group could save money by bringing back Wake and Varitek.  HA.

Theo is under contract as OUR GM.  We have every right to play hardball and make the Cubs give us something significant for him.  I'm thrilled that Lucchino isn't letting Theo walk for nothing.

Posted by ADG[/QUOTE]ADG it is no secret that LL and Theo Epstein locked horns very badly when Theo's contract came up for renewal after the 2005 season.

But trying to paint that the RS are LL seeking retribution on Theo Epstein is just a non-starter. Retribution would be denying the Cubs the right to talk to Theo, changing reporting structures so Epstein loses his dotted line to the managing partner and beginning a reshuffle of responsibilities this year so if Epstein was to walk at the end of his contract the move would be even more transparent then than it will be when Cherington takes over now. Theo quits, so what? The RS don't pay him and he can't work for anybody else. If not, Theo is no dope, he does his work because not to hurts his future value in the sport.

As for the comments about guys like Tek and Wake saving money versus if the RS were to swallow Epstein's contract, not to be snippy, don't you understand Collective Bargaining Tax at all?

IMO people over react to every news cycle. The Cubs since they leaked the interest in Epstein two months ago have worked the news cycles through unnamed sources to get Epstein and are now doing it to reduce any compensation because they believe the RS are vulnerable.

The RS haven't blinked yet. It appears all they want is a similar compensation package to one the White Sox got for Ozzie Gullien.

Sometimes it would probably be a better world if the media was not so pervasive as it is these days.

Wow! Gee... Umm another story with unnamed sources I don't believe. Who would've guessed?

Why on earth would the Red Sox just give Theo to another team without getting as much as they can for him?  They need him, and since he's going to be replaced by the Red Sox, we don't. Why not get somone we need in return?  I would ask for anyone I wanted, and let the Cubs decide what they want to do.
