The 7-8-9 in the Sox lineup seems a bit light...hopefully I am wrong.

Youk is aging out, and so is Ortiz. Crawford and Ellsbury are a 30 million a year terrible value for one at the cost of two. Without a superstar RH stick to matchup with AGon, there isn't anything impressive about this AL lineup. As with 2011, and subtracting Scutaro, it will be inconsistent and unable to produce more than potemkin aggregate numbers that fool most baseball observers. The bottom line is in the standard deviation.

This suggestion is not going to cure many if any RH bat ills but it might and it might do  something to heal some of the anamosity some fans feel toward CC.
I would do one of two things:
    1. Work out Lavarnway in the outfield in ST---more specifically in Left and work out Crawford in Right--as much as possible to see if it's even conceiveable. Crawford owes one to the fans and the team to experiment with RF if it can make the team stronger. If it is workable, DMac is DFA'd and you look to sign Vlad to an incentive ladden contract as an emergency outfielder, backup DH, PH. It strengthens the bench, it increases the potential Righhandedness of the order and it add to the flexibility of the team.
    2. This move also allows the Sox to carry a third catcher to add additional flexibility for in game decisions.

If the above move is made and we have the availability of both CC and Lav in the lineup at the same time we have a stronger lineup and a stronger bench.
In addition for interleague play you will be stronger with Vlad and Lav available to play the field.

Bobby V would have to sell CC on this as a benefit to help the team.

    Ells--CF          / Sweeney
    CC--RF          /Sweeney/Ross
    Dustin--2 B     / Punto
    AGon--1 B      / Youk/ Salty
    Youk--3 B      /Punto
    Ortiz--DH       / Vlad/ Youk
    Lav--LF         /Ross/ Sweeney
    Salty--C        / Shop/ Lav
    Iggy--SS       / Aviles

    Pinch hitters--Vlad/Lav/ Aviles/ Sweeney/

Yes Lav played outfield early on at Yale.

You probably didn't notice, but the question was about batting order.

    Do you have an opinion?

For me, the same order as last year.

You probably didn't notice, but the question was the batting order, 40 days before opening day. The batting order isn't going to matter with current roster construction. They will end up having to find a capable RH bat for this season and the near future.

Batting orders changed all last year. Pay attention, witless wit wimp.

If Crawford is a 20M a year bottom half of the order guy in your batting order, Joe, please do Red Sox fans a favor and sue InEpstein for failure of consideration.

The odds of that happening are about the same as trying Lav in left, trying CC in right and thinking Vlad can still play the outfield. Outfield defense is very important, and your scenario creates arguably the worst defensive outfield in history, slows Lav's development as catcher and gives us a roster with two guys who can't play defense (Vladimir & Papi).

I didn't like the CC signing.  I wanted Willingham.

I also wanted to be 6' tall, but I'm not.

See, the point is, when you ask someone about which lineup they prefer, you do so based on the current roster.

If you don't have an opinion, that's fine.  Not everyone has to participate.  But it is a thread about the lineup, not the roster.  If you don't like the roster composition, start a thread about it.  If you think we are too righty or lefty heavy, start a thread about it.

In other words, try sticking to the subject on hand.

Now, do you an opinion on the roster?
