Seems to me like moving him to the bullpen might be a bad idea - sounds like he's just found some success, the better idea might be to keep him in the role he's in, starter. But how do you justify that to Wake and Aceves?

You don't have to.  They are employees.  You put the best team you can on the field.

Globe reports he's on his way - going to start against San Diego... http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2011/06/source_red_sox.html Wakefield and Lackey will see their starts 'shifted'.

    Thanks for that.

Interesting; Miller decided to opt out. Theo lost trying to get him to exercise his August option. Never thought I'd see them go with a 6-man rotation, although I like the idea. They were obviously pushed into this.

Best guess: The first ineffective outing by Wake/Miller and he's demoted to BP duty. Lackey also needs be sharp.

Six man rotations do not work. On top of it, you lose a bullpen arm in doing so. Why not just send Bowden or Hottovy down and use Miller in relief.

Because Miller has been extended as a starter. He is now excelling in that role in AAA.
Starters have more team value. He can always go to the pen.

Bowden deserves the right to stay.
    Hottovy is borderline and replaceable.
I don't think the 6-man rotation is permanent. It's likely a weeding out process.

No need for a 6 man rotation. Keep Bowden and Hottovy and give Miller 3 or 4 starts to see if he can be effective and post a 4 plus to 5 ERA in MLB. Let Wastefield go fishing in Florida on a DL, or simply DFA. Pretty simple.

Foundered, Floundered.  To-may-to, to-mah-to.  Either or both could work.  Edes is a good writer.

Seems that Miller is headed to the starting rotation.  For Wake?  Wake to the pen?  Aceves to the Pen?  Six starters until one founders or flounders?

Sounds like a problem the Yankees wish they had.  Either Wake of Aceves could use a rest.  Niether has a good history of holding up for the long haul.  Skipping a start by both players may help them hold up through September.

Wouldn't that require Aceves to be starting right now (in order to have him skip a start)?  Aceves is in the pen.  Now if Wake were to move back to the pen, Aceves could resume 7th/8th inning work as he wouldn't need to be ready to pitch every time Wake starts (which is what he's been doing since Lackey came back).

Peter Abraham says the rumor mill sees Miller going to Boston as a sixth starter because the Sox don't want to lose him and because his best slot is as a starter.  That would be a fascinating development.  As Abraham says, Miller is ready to leave the Sox immediately if they don't move him up because he is right now a hot commodity.  Who can blame him?

Re: What should Theo do? Deadline looms for Andrew Miller

They don't need 6 starters. They need 5 starters and all pen arms settle in roles. they need 2 guys who can spot start or swing up and go 4 or 5 on occassion when a transition is needed for starter injury or ineffectiveness. They need Lester, Buck and Beckett getting as many starts as possible without overworking them. They do not need Wakefield and Miller. They need to go with Miller for a few starts and see how he does, then line up Doubrant etc. behind all of that.
