What will Ben's 25 man opening Day roster look like-2012?

It will be minus Terry, Pap, Tek, Wake, JD and possibly Papi and Youk.
We will have a new manager and new coaches.
We may have a new RF, DH, Closer, starting pitchers and a 3 b.
This will be Ben's team and not Theo's.
Probably new  Medical people, trainers, a nutritionist??

Time and people change--the Ballpark and fans are the constant.

Bourjos, CC, Pedey, AGon, Youk, Beltran, Lavarnway, Aviles, Scutaro

    Starters--Haren, Lester, Rodriquez, Buch, Aceves

Pen--Bard, Bell, Bowden, Morales, Jenks, Doubrount, Broxton

    Subs.--Lowrie, Salty, Reddick, Kubel

Yeah I'd rather  have Haren  than Beckett  any day...

Nice fantasy, with Ellsbury to Angels as the sober notion. Ellsbury needs to be traded after windfall season in front of Pedroia and AGon, as Sox need a long term Rh Ofer and pitching. Only a fool would retain Ellsbury 2 arb years, after 2011 season and Crawford on Inepstein's carnage accounts payable.

You continue to not make sense.

If you'd need to be a fool to retain Ellsbury for 2 arb, then you'd be a fool to trade for Ellsbury for 2 arb years.

Could you explain what you mean?

I basically asked you a question.  If it would be foolish for us to retain him, would it not be foolish for someone else to trade for him?  Isn't this a -0- sum game?  Our gain is someone else's loss?

Re: What will Ben's 25 man opening Day roster look like-2012?

Teams have different priorities and payroll flexibilities. The Angels need offense more than the Red Sox do, and the Angels albatross contracts are shorter in duration than those of the Red Sox. The Angels might have a better chance of re-signing Ellsbury than the Red Sox.

I just don't think the Angels would trade both Haren and Bourjos for him. I love the creative thinking and I agree with trading Ellsbury because Crawford's presence makes it nearly impossible to extend him. Ellsbury's trade value will never be higher than it is right now.

If I were the Angels, a team in desperate need of an offensive boost, I would definitely have interest in Ellsbury. However, I wouldn't want to give up Bourjos, who might turn out to be every bit as good as Ellsbury and who still has 5 more years under organizational control. Ellsbury and Lowrie for Haren and Downs might be conceivable.

I read an article the Yanks are seriously looking to put a package together for Dan Haren. Montero and a young 3b  would be amoung the players. Haren is a well recognized talent, I think more valuable than CJ.

david Downs and Haren would be a nice package but might be the $ cost of a long term Ells contract, though shorter term.

Ells contract is to discuss in yet another thread--I can't believe Ells would allow Boras to turn down a long term deal for $15 to 18 for 8 years, to wait 2 more years til F Agency.

Re: What will Ben's 25 man opening Day roster look like-2012?

First of all, Lowrie or Aviles have no shot to become a full time 3B.  At the same time there are not much 3B that are on trading block as well these free agents for 3B postion all stunk.  I strongly think Youkilis will be back cuz there is not much choice.  If Youk ever get hurt, it is a good time to bring up Middlebrook, and give him a shot over there.

Second of all, for RF position, it is more likely Boston will stay pact or sign a free agent such as Beltran or etc.  Carlos Quinten may be a nice addition, but do not think that White Sox will only just take Reddick.  They would be asking for more than that such as to ask for Middlebrook, Lavarnway, etc to be include in the trade.  Forget him.

Third of all, the Angels will not try to trade their young OF, Bourjos for young Ellsbury.  Angels already in love Bourjos, and know he will be cheap to keep for a while.  Plus the Angels's payroll is already pretty high again for this coming 2012 season.  But after 2012 season, their payroll will reduce more likely in a half due cuz they will have alot of their own players that will become a free agent after the 2012 season.  It is more likely Angels can wait until after 2012 season to get Ellsbury.

With a fat payroll that Boston have, and it is more likely Boston will just try use $$$ and trade for pitchings.

Re: What will Ben's 25 man opening Day roster look like-2012?

We all know how this is going to play out.

The Sox will sign Carlos Beltran and not David Ortiz.  With the potential for more interleague games as soon as 2013, Ortiz just isn't as valuable.

The Sox will trade Jed Lowrie to Colorado for Ryan Spilsborgh in a swap of arbitration-eligible players who are both redundant to their current team, but each fill a void on the other roster.  (Both might even get non-tendered after the trade and re-signed for less money.  It's an odd move, but not an unprecedented one.)

The Sox will scour the non-tender market for at least one SP and take a flier on a reclaimation project for another.  Think names like Joe Saunders, Kevin Slowey, Erik Bedard.

The Sox will be unable to acquire a quality SP via trade, but will sign a relief pitcher with closing experience, such as Chad Qualls, Matt Capps. Jonathan Broxton or non-tender candidate Leo Nunez Juan Carlos Oviedo, or LNJCO. as I like to call him.  This pitcher will compete with Bard and Bobby Jenks for the closing role on opening day.  Unless its LNJCO, who will take the role over.

The starting infield will be Gonzalez, Pedroia, Youkilis and Scutaro.  The starting OF will be Crawford, Ellsbury and a Reddick/Spilsborghs platoon.  Beltran will DH and occasionally play RF.

The Sox will probably acquire a backup catcher.  Mike Aviles and one other player will fill out the bench.  That player might be Jose Lopez, who brings defense at two positions and RH power.  Or Kevin Kouzmanoff, who is essentially the same player but doesn't play 2B.  Either could man 3b if/when Beltran plays RF.

The two SP's team with Beckett, Buchholz and Lester for the rotation.  The 3 relievers above combine with Aceves, Albers, Morales and another (Bowden? Doubront?  Wheeler?) to round out the bullpen.

    Book it...

Re: What will Ben's 25 man opening Day roster look like-2012?

it looks like ben will have his hands full this offseason without a doubt. I have been looking over suggestions put forth by other posters and have seen some good ideas. when it comes to right field, i think the guy that might be the most realistic option is carlos quentin. quentin is right handed, plays good d, and hits for power. in fenway he would have 30+ homer potential. He also would not cost a heck of a lot which is good because we need to save our chips to get a pitcher like gio gonzalez. so here goes my roster for 2012

    elssbury
    pedroia
    gonzalez
    youk
    ortiz
    crawford
    quentin
    salty/lavarnway
    scutaro

bench: salty/lavarnway, lowrie, reddick/kalish (one of them would be in the deal for quentin), aviles.

    lester
    beckett
    gonzalez (gio)
    buchholz
    webb (good buy low option)

    pen:

    bell
    bard
    jenks
    aceves
    hill
    doubront
    broxton
