    What's Up with Lester?!

What's Lester been doing? After coming off the DL, Lester is 0-2 and is pitching like a terrible John Lackey. However, lately, in his past 6 starts, Lackey is 6-0, and now his record is 11-8. Lester is stuck at 11-6. Yes, Lackey's ERA is a bit high at 6.13, but Lester is at 3.35. So how come Lester is not pitching like Jon Lester? He loses to the Yankees, and Bartolo Colon was pitching. And Lester loses to the Twins. So either we find another ace, or Lester starts getting more wins.

It's not just Lester, our entire rotation has been sketchy outside of Josh who finally had a bad game himself after getting very little run support all season.  Our offense had been playing so well a lot of the mediocre outings have been overlooked by some fans.  Now that our offensive numbers have leveled off its just more obvious.

you are correct. a good offense will smoke-screen mediocre pitching most times.
the good offense has been average lately, but the mediocre to bad pitching remains and will likely stay until the end of the season.
the SOX had better get their smoke-screen going again.

I dont think you can say that a 3.32 ERA in the AL is Mediocre to Bad....it is not as good as we would like but with ouf offense it should be more than good enough. I mean his Career ERA is 3.51....so maybe we are expecting too much from him. That said, without being an expert but watching all his games, he doesnt seem to be challenging hitters like he did last year....too much nibbling and too many deep counts.

Expectations for Lester are too high.  His numbers this year are very consistent with what they've been the past 3 years.  He's maintained a very high level of performance, though a tick below Cy Young winner level performance.

i know my frame of reference is small, but he seems to be the same Jon Lester to me, maybe the only thing i see is him missing a bit more often with his FB, and going to the curve a bit too late, i know in that Yankee game he pitched  it took him a couple of innings to feature his curve...could have been by design, i don't know....

Lester has never reached that true "CY Young" ability he may have but is still a very good pitcher I feel fortunate to have.  Beck, Clay and Jon all pitched well this season but had a few rocky starts that are expected.  You need to look beyond these three and our offense finally leveling out to even begin to see the real issues.  Even so, we are still in first place but the concerns are there to have PS success.

Lester has never been an "ace" over the course of a whole season.  He is always solid.  And he goes through streaks where looks absolutely like he is the dominant lefty in the game.  But he also has his swoons.  This year is no different.  The DL stint just added a hiccup.  Too much to expect him to be lights out all the time.  But, something tells me that we will all be hailing his mastery again before all is said and done with 2011.

    Hey spaceman,
Let's remember he had some problems with his lat just before the AS break, missed almost three weeks and might still be fine tuning his repetoire...

The reality is Lester's numbers given the venue he pitches in have been stellar. CY young's aren't all that, Schilling, I believe never won one. To me the thing missing from Lester's resume is a dominant run in the post season ala Beckett in 2007...Something he has a chance to do this year and if he does like CC in 2007 he can have the CY, Josh was just fine with the WS trophy...

Lester is no concern.    The bigger problem is the innings workload of the bullpen up to now.
    Bard (54) - Papelbon (54) - Albers (40) - Aceves (37) Wheeler (36) and Morales (35).
This indicates that pitchers are not going deep into games.     It better get better or the bullpen will be gassed out by late Sept.

The numbers belie that fact that Lester has been "missing his pitch" more often than in the past, seems to be upset more often on the mound than in the past. and lately has been having trouble with "that inning." He does not look as comfortable or as confident as he has in the past -- once he hit his stride in late May or June. His arm has been lagging a bit, always a sign of fatigue ( along with high pitches ) or out of sync mechanics.
Maybe these are all impressions, but to me he just doesn't look like the same pitcher people were touting as the next ace.

Personally, I think Lester is pitching fine and am not worried about him.

One thing that I had noticed earlier in the year though (I haven't paid that close attention in his last couple of starts), is that on that outside FB to RHB, Lester is hitting Salty's target on the nose.  In other words, Lester threw the pitch exactly where he wanted to.  That is often the pitch that Lester thinks is a strike but gets called a ball.  Perhaps there is something in where Salty is setting his target that needs to be adjusted ever so slightly?

It's not unusual for a catcher to set up just off the plate when a lefty with late movement on his FB is pitching to a righty. This is to remind the pitcher that the ball should be headed that way as it goes over the outside corner. In other words, don't start the pitch where it might drift over the heart of the plate. OTOH, it's possible that Salty is not framing the pitch or pulling it in order to get the call from the ump.
I have to admit that you apparently see these things better than I in that split second when the ball enters the catcher's glove in relation to the plate.
Finally, some umps have a tighter zone than others.
It'a a little hard to believe that between Tek and Tuck the young catcher is not being watched closely -- including on video -- or not being taught how to set up.

    Re: What's Up with Lester?!

I don't think there's anything up with Lester, his command seems to be a bit off and he's throwing too many cutters for my taste...Let's remember he went down with a lat injury and was out for 3 weeks and he's only had four starts since returning from the DL. The Sox are 1 & 3 in those games. While he hasn't been his domminant self, he has pitched well enough to win each of them with a little more run support? The Sox in the three losses have scored a total of 5 runs...Lester in those three games gave up 8 earned.

Since returning from the DL...I'd say that Lester's still trying to refine his command, evidenced by his walking nine guys in his last two starts. Something that you can't do while on the DL...I'm pretty sure that he and Young are working on just that in his side sessions. If he's healthy, he's the least of our concerns moving forward. I'd expect him to dial it up a notch and finish strong...

Lesters ERA and WHIP this year are pretty much exactly the same as they have been in his best years.  Lester has never been that top of the line starter.  He's just really good.  Just take the time to look up his stats and you will see that he is right where he always is.

The big difference I see this year are the umps are not giving him the borderline strikes as much.  His walks are up and I seem to think Tek does a better job milking strikes then Salty.  At the end of the day Lester is a tier 1A pitcher any day of the week.
