What's your realistic goal for this season?

At some point every fan of every team has to take a look at their team's performance and set a realistic goal, and the operative word here is "realistic"  On Opening Day the Red Sox fans had a realistic goal for their team of a 2nd Word Series Championship.  Today, well, probably not so much.  This team is starting to gel and playing better and I like what I'm seeing.  However, they've dug themselves a huge hole over the first 90 games, one they may not be able to dig their way out of.

While I haven't given up on the Sox making the playoffs and then "anything can happen", at the same time I've lowered my realistic sights some.

My realistic goal for the Red Sox is now for them to finish the season within 5 games of the top of their division.  If they gain a WC berth it will be a pleasant surprise, and if they actually WIN the division I'll be almost giddy.

Any owners who sign previously suspended PED abusers to a big $$ contract are as guilty of perpetuating the PED problem as are the players.

And I have never posted here under any other names.

I don't think that way.  My philosophy is, let's win today's game.  Same thing tomorrow.

Yup, with extra emphasis on beating up other teams in the division.

This stretch of inter-division games is huge.

Though this is a purely rhetorical exercise, as we can obviously not set goals for other people/organizations that we have no real hand in effecting, I don't see it as even a realistic  'goal' if you dont at least set the bar to a point you have not yet reached.  5 games out of the division?  They could realistically be there next week.

Yeah, it's possible, but it would involve a lot of things going right, and I don't think it's realistic for that to happen.

And even if it does happen... what are the chances of their staying there?  It's still a long season.

It usually takes ~93-94 wins to win the AL East, a .577 %-age, and I see that as being out of reach now.  But the good news is that nobody in this division is going to win 93-94 games unless they really turn it around.  87 wins may get the division championship and for that the Sox have to win 40 more games, a winning %-age of .644 from here on in.  That would be an amazing streak over 63 games.

I'd like to see them doing it, just as I'd like to see them come from 5 runs down in the bottom of the 9th, but do I realistically think it's going to happen?  Well.. I wish I did.

And for the record, I'm not throwing in any towels, I'm just trying to look at it realistically.

Re: What's your realistic goal for this season?

With the division being as weak as it is, making the playoffs is both realistic and doable.  The offense has recently been performing like many expected them to do all season.  It's kind of ironic that Pedroia has been the weak offensive link lately.

FWIW, Fangraphs projections has the Sox as the best team in the AL East for the remainder of the season.  It might not be quite enough, but it should be a very exciting September, at the least.

We played like dogs for three months so maybe we can over achieve for a couple of months and make the playoffs, and with the pitching we have, well...

I think our pitching (Starting & BP) is better than any team in the ALE. If they get some consistent offense, winning the division IS realistic IMHO.

I say they win the division.
