In response to BOSOX1941's comment:
He needs to put the best nine players on the field each game. The only position player that should need a rest is the catcher. They have off days during most weeks. Don't over manage, by that I mean don't fix something that isn't broken. Make moves to help the team score a needed run when appropriate. Do not strictly adhere to the "100" pitch count !! Before bringing in the "8th" inning pitcher, think carefully, ditto with the closer. Do not bring in a reliever in a close game simply because he needs work. Inform the pitching staff that major league baseball is a nine inning game and the starters should be preparing to pitch NINE innings, thus lessening the need for relief specialists. They need to understand that six good innings IS NOT a quality start. Last but not least...........DO NOT SIT AND SPIT ! !
Very few losses should be as a result of poor managing, but they will occasionally happen. There aren't that many games that a manager has the opportunity actually help the team win with sound decisions, but when there is that time, don't "Stand & Drool". I will refrain from using nicknames for Farrell as long as he adheres to the above standards.
P.S. NO BABYSITTING ! ! These are men who are paid handsomely to PLAY baseball. Very handsomely.
BOSOX, you are still living in the 40's-60's my friend...the game has changed to the point whereby there are few pitchers who even try to go 9 innings anymore...circumstances, like pitch counts and relief specialists are part of the game now and these guys arms are not as resilient as they used to be...I don't know what changed over the years but you must admit guys blow out elbows and go for TJ surgery at least once in their career.
I didn't really pay much attention to how Farrell managed in Toronto, but I suspect a lot of Francona's amangerial techniques might have passed to Farrell. So I suspect you should start coming up with your new nickname soon...
...the way games are managed has changed alot over the years...now with these big salaries comes protecting the investment...so rest and not wearing players down is part of team strategy now.
