    Where was Gomes???

When Bradley just missed that fly off the wall in left center, it turned into an inside the park dinger largely because Gomes made no attempt to back Bradley up until long after the fact.  There was no play at the plate.

LOL....You can't back up a player when your as far back as you can get. A ball hit off the wall could go in any direction so where would your other outfielder guess he should be? Gomes could have been in front of JBJ but if ball goes right or left both players are screwed. tough call as where to be in that situation. Had Ball bounced to Gomes ,you wouldn't be asking that question. Also left field wall is not flat and ball could hit any little crack or indent and take off on it's own. Not easy out there unless your watching from home and second guessing .

I'd offer a couple of things:

    1) Gomes' first concern may have been for Bradley being seriously hurt, especially with the score 7-0.

    2) The guy that hit it can fly - they showed the replay of him running the bases on Fox - he was around them in a serious hurry.

You need to watch the replay as I have several times.  Gomes made no initial move to get into position anywhere near where the play was made.  And when he enters the picture he is running away from the infield toward the wall, not running to his left side as you are implying.  Normally, a ball hit to left center is a good bet for a double.  If mishandled, a triple.  But never an inside the park home run with no play at the plate.  A ball hit into the triangle in CF is often a triple unless well played and possibly an insider.  But this was left center off the green monster.  Gomes fell asleep out there.

The runner was already rounding second when the ball came off the wall.

Not an easy play to make or to back up; the ball took a crazy bounce off of JBJ's face.  Gomes tended to JBJ as Sizemore made the throw in.

Ball was easily a triple, even if the backup had been played perfectly.

JBJ also made a sick effort to get to a ball in a game the Sox were winning by 7 runs.

That's the bottom line here, imo.

Gomes can do no wrong in Farrells eye.  If that was Salty he would have at the very least been benched a couple of games.

Again.lol... Get into position? Anywhere near? Where would that be? So easy from your seat. Trust me ! Very hard to do.Question..... Why do balls hit to right get by the right fielder even when he's in position to get it? Just a sample of how.... not that easy as you think it is.Things happen in a spit second and you have to react. The angles are so hard to play  and funny things can happen ,unless your in your seat telling everyone how to position yourself on each ball hit off the wall. There was a big first baseman for the RedSox ,the slowest player on the team hit a ball off the left field wall ....Got a inside the park home run. Does happen ... Sorry to tell you this. I know it couldn't happen if you were out there. OH ! And where was Gomes? David Price got called for holding Gomes shirt.

    Re: Where was Gomes???

I get mad at Gomes periodically, but overall had no problem with him in LF. He has even made some good plays and throws.  Last night, however, it seemed pretty obvious he fell asleep on that play.

All you Gomes defenders need to look at the replay.  My point is not that Gomes went to the wrong place because that could happen to anyone, especially playing something off the green monster.  My point is that he did nothing until it was obvious Bradley was in trouble.  Oh, and when he finally got out there, he made a clean pickup of the ball and throw.

What happened to the outfielders on AJ triple the other night? They fell asleep someone should have caught it. Why not mention that one. Ball was deep but also very high and both just fell asleep thinking other was there. Too late lets dance......

    Re: Where was Gomes???

gomes it terrible defensively, he has a weak arm and limited range. He is slow as can be and does not make routine plays in LF. He is a DH, maybe he can learn to play 1B. He should not be an outfielder.

    Re: Where was Gomes???

he had a rough series defensively.  he should have made that catch friday night toward the LF stands in foul ground.  the ball clanked off his heel.  same thing in yesterdays game....misjudged the ball back towards the wall and it went off the side of his glove.  maybe he is feeling the pressure of trying to protect ortiz and it's carrying onto the field.
