why are we obsessed with what ONE player can do vs LHP?

Ellsbury overall is KILLING this year, and Boston overall is one of the best teams and arguably THEE best against LHP.....

Ellsbury has very solid career numbers vs. LHP, almost no platoon split at all. It seems likely that his "disappointing" performance vs. LHP this year is merely a 100-AB fluke, not evidence that he has forgotten how to hit them.

The Red Sox have the third best offense vs. LHP (by OPS). However they are doing it, the recipe works. As the 21-11 record vs. LH starters attests.

Exactly!!! well said.

Also Boston is 1st in Runs, Hits, Doubles, RBI's and 2nd in HR, AVG, OBP.  And that is across all MLB teams not just the A.L. Hitting LHP is not as big a weakness as people think on this team.

Re: Who is More Deserving Than Ellsbury, Mark II

Good points, billbyboy, it is rather too early to be certain that Ellsbury will sustain his present level of production. It is hard to be certain of ANYTHING on a partial-season sample. He does look good, though, no?
So, since the Red Sox have a good record v. LH starters, go with the status quo
The full argument is a little more involved than that...
• The Red Sox are 21-11 v. LH starters.
• The Red Sox OPS vs. LHP is third best in the league.
• They have four hitters who have raked LHP this year (Pedroia, Ortiz, Youkilis, Lowrie), four more who are competent against LHP (Gonzalez, Scutaro, Ellsbury, Salty/Tek). That leaves only LF and RF as weaknesses against LHP.
• Reddick didn't have much of a L/R split throughout the minors, and hasn't demonstrated much trouble against LHP in the majors. I believe he will eventually prove competent, which is a HUGE improvement over the guys he would replace.
• Crawford has a career .684 OPS against LHP. Citing a very small sample from the start of the year is not sufficient to convince me that he has suddenly "lost it" against lefties. So add him to that "competent" list.
Isn't clear whether you have a specific proposal in mind, or are just trying to cause trouble? I freely admit it would be nice to have one fewer LHH and one more RHH. I just don't believe it is a sufficiently pressing concern to rip apart and rebuild the team mid-season, or to block a promising prospect.
