Gotta go with the kid, if he's as good a glove as advertised it gives us the best defensive infield in all of baseball.

I think it's important for the Sox to get off to a good start this Spring. Aviles should get the start.

If Iglesias shows some improvement, offensively, and there's an injury, bring him up then.

He's only 21. There's no need to rush him.

There is no room for Iglesias on the 25 man Roster unless he is the starting SS.
Aviles will probably be the guy.

If Iglesias shows in ST that he has made hhge strides since last summer: that he can recognize pitches, be patient, and stay balanced, then ok, lets roll with the Kid With the Magic Glove.

    But, barring this, Aviles.

Kevin Youkilis' negative 2011 UZR at thirdbase notwithstanding?

Reading tea leaves is a tough act but my gut feeling is Aviles gets the nod. My mind says that Iggy is the better SS and he would be the wiser choice. So going with my mind I would put Jose in and use Aviles as the proverbial super sub along with Punto.

Considering his injuries? Yes. Hip bursitis is going to slow any infielder down.

Why would he be a better option? Yes he can hit, but at best he is a below average fielder. The Red Sox need someone at short who will steal away some AB’s from the opposition and maybe help the pitchers cut down on their pitch counts. Also, HanRam is another prima Dona who will need special attention like someone else named Ramirez. There is a big problem on this board of coveting players on other teams. If you really want to improve the team, look at the total player such as hitting, defense, and how well they play with others. Some of my favorite sox players were not always the best, just had the desire to be the best like Rick Burleson. Add that to some talent and then you have a winning ballplayer.

Will the new Babe be TBSHTB1970? Poor guy has been banned 211 times now. Those moderators are not fair. I suggest that Spaceman, Hammer, and J-Bay do something about ending this unjust treatment of their good buddy.

The only true SS is Iglesias. If the RS are going to continue to play utility guys at SS, the defense will suffer.
The offense is good enough even with Iggy in the line-up, and the hits and runs saved, far out-weigh any offensive deficiency.

Again, missing the point about the reason to at least start Iggy in AAA.  Its not about the runs produced/runs saved ratio.  Its about the kids development and maturation.  If the kid still doesn't know how to take a pitch or recognize breaking stuff, he is going to get eaten alive.

I agree. The Sox have to give him a chance to improve his batting skills in AAA.

If Aviles does end up being a huge liability at SS, then you can give Iggy a shot at it.
Personally, I think Aviles will be fine at SS.

Good to see you back, Drewski. Pedy and Valentine have been spending a lot of time with the kid, so they're giving him a good, long hard look. Valentine said yesterday no matter where he hit the ball, couldn't get one by him. No question about his defense.

Amazing how weak this team has been at shortstop since '04. Let's see, Renteria, Gonzalez, Lugo, Scutaro, Lowrie ... am I missing anyone?
