    why does tampa win

    they have excellent starting pitching.
they totally rebuilt their bullpen with no names.farnsworth the closer?! -unlike some team we know well that went for washed up names
they play sound fundamental baseball in all areas -unlike that other team
they get clutch hitting from everyone they play.guys like fuld who's been in minors for years.longoria, upton and zobrist are only 3 who would make the other team.
they have great managing and coaching- the oher team has coma and, and, and nothing.

In addition to what ...jack mentioned they are playing  laid-back--there were very low expectations at the beginning and they are exceeding all expectations.
They are playing great on the road--they're like a band of brothers when they leave home---they seem more relaxed when they're away.
No one goes to their games---not much press--pretty easy going. Madon has played the fact they lost their pen-the starting pitching is young--Longoria was out for a while and they lost Manny--no respect.
There;s alot to be said for playing under "no pressure."

That is a huge point that can't be underestimated.  I might be wrong but it has looked to me so far that the Sox are playing tight because of all the expectations on them.  It's almost like there's too much pressure on them to win because everybody talked about how good they were in the offseason.  Some guys strive on that, others have a hard time handling the heat.

Having said that, I still think starting pitching is the biggest factor.

One team drafted at the beginning of the first round and the other didn't so they started to go overslot with only moderate success so far.

Price (1st pick) of the 2007 amateur draft
    Hamilton (1st pick) in 2000
    Upton (2nd pick) 2002
    Young (1st pick) 2003
    Niemann (4th pick) 2004
    Longoria  (3rd pick) 2006

The Rays are a fundmentally sound team that doesn't very often  beat themselves.    Lots of flexability on the roster.   Good, talented farm system.
Good situational manager that gets the best out of his players with little money to spend.

the main reason the SOX lose is because they score less runs than the opposition. this pattern will result in many more losses.

however LOSING  is not always a bad thing; here's some examples:

    SLACKEY
    WAKE
    V-TEK
    DREW
    DICE-K
    HALF-THE BULLPEN
    TITO
    THEO

LOSING the above would actually be a good thing.

They win because they are good - they were good on paper in january - they have a recent history of winning with their core players - what about baseball don't you understand?

It's apparent that there aren't any Tampa fans on this thread. I live in Central Florida and hear the talk shows on the Rays, and the Rays fans rip Maddon as bad as the bashers on this thread rip Francona.

The grass is always greener, I guess.

I can count one hand how many times they have made the playoffs.

They have gone to the World Series exactly once ...and they lost.

This team spent decades in the bottom third of the AL.

It is only May. They haven't won anything this year yet.

Quite frankly , I think Maddon gets too much credit when these guys do well. He doesn't manage a whole lot differently than 29 other managers including Francona do. Francona gets slammed when the Sox are doing poorly, but the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox had about the same talent level as 1975 and 1986 teams that fell short...he can't be as stupid as the "coma people" want us to believe he is.

Band of brothers is an inappropriate analogy because the first band of brothers were the British at the Battle of Agincourt--which Shakespeare used to create that great scene in Henry V (hank cinq) and the second were the 101st Airborne in World War II.

The Rays are a good team having a great year so far, but they are grown men playing a kids game--without sacrifice of any kind or, for that matter, any heroism.

    Re: why does tampa win

This past winter many here were ready to write off Tampa because they lost some offense.  How is that working out?

Tampa has built a complete home grown starting rotation.  They are not all number one picks.  They are all young and go deep into games.

In golf they say that Drives are for show but Putting wins tournaments.  The same goes for baseball. To many here place to much importance on how many home runs our players hit.  Home Runs are for show.  Pitching wins Pennants.

The motto here is to never write off a team that has tremendous pitching.  Good pitching is  enough to consistently win. They have one of the best five-man rotations in the league.

Tampa has proven they can draft and develop players.  With all of those draft picks in this years draft they will be formidable for years to come.

Good starting pitching, most home grown.
Players that can bunt and hit and run and players that are flexible; multiple switch hitters, players that can play several positions well and better than average team speed.
They have a manager that is a good psychologist in addition to being a good manager.

    Re: why does tampa win

They've scored almost as many runs as the Sox (347 vs 325) and their ERA is a full point better. Also it may not be a huge difference, but their schedule seems a bit easier (Twins, White Sox, Orioles a lot).

That's why it's funny when Sox fans scream about Salty and Tek it's not that relevant. The Sox have PLENTY of offense. Lackey's ERA is 8, Jenks 9, Wheeler 11. When that improves the Sox will pass the Rays regardless of who catches.
