How sad this game has become giving slug players $10 mil a year to sit on the bench because they can't contiribute.

And its only going to get worse, which is why teams are going to hang onto and try to extend their own prospects.

The thread just veered off.  Who is getting $10M to sit on the bench?

I think he meant Gomes' 2/10 deal...Thats the only one I can think of except Drew, but hes going to start.

Hmm I'm with geo on this one

"ross was a great cherington sign...until we didnt want him anymore....now he is a bad fielder, his splits are bad, and no one wanted him..."

neither is a budget alternating contract

neither will change ticket or food prices

    ,..........................................................................................................

    JB

while I admit this has little to do with me agreeing with geo

    as much as i tried

I just couldn't let it end with your answers

1-You are not paying $9 for a loaf of rye bread. I know that and you know that. There are plenty of things that my family likes, that they won't get, unless I can afford it.

the difference between player A & player be wasn't 9mil

and WE All know the sox could afford it

2-When I say I like to root for the same players, it doesn't necessarily mean all 56 players that we used last year need to be on the 25-man squad this year.

come on JB U owe me better than that

mr cheerful wasn't just one of the 56

he was one of the fan favs last yr

3-Why are the NYY in a unique situation trying to get under the cap?
    they're not unique ?

which teams have a similar track record

for both making the post season and PAYING the lux tax over the last 10 plus yrs

the only thing the sox & yanks are similar with is

they both have the highest prices

LAD is over, we're at the ceiling, as are several other teams. There is absolutely no difference between us passing on Ross because he is too expensive, and the NYY passing on Martin, Swisher, and Chavez because they are too expensive.

Both teams want to get to the limit. The NYY opted for Ichiro for $6.5M instead of Swisher at $13M. The RS opted for Gomes for $5M instead of Ross at $9M. About as identical as you can get.

like I said B4 about martin

your comparisons have no merit until the yanks sign another player to replace them

so far they are just going with guys they already had

    ichiro isn't replacing swish

    gomes replaced cody

So the $10M player that is going to sit on the bench is actually a $5M player that is going to play.  My bad for not understanding him.

It is more a matter of how you spend your money, than what you can afford.  And the difference between Ross and Gomes is the same as the difference on Martin, Swisher, and Chavez combined.

come on JB U owe me better than that

mr cheerful wasn't just one of the 56

I'm just speaking on my own behalf.  If you don't see the difference between rooting for a long time player and MVP like Pedey and Cano, or a one-year player like Ross or Ichiro, then we'll have to agree to disagree.

    they're not unique ?

So you're saying that the Yankees trying to stay under the payroll tax, and the RS trying to stay under the payroll tax are completely different?

    ichiro isn't replacing swish

    gomes replaced cody

Just so I understand, that means either Swisher was not your RF last year, or Ichiro was not your RF this year.  Right?

Your opening day lineup last year was

    • Gardner LF
    • Granderson CF
    • Swisher RF

This year, it is projected to be:

    • Gardner LF
    • Granderson CF
    • Ichiro RF

Or put another way, if Ichiro is not replacing Swisher, then who will play RF this year?

I liked Ross but the Gomes will be just as good in left.  Ross cant field any better so we actually got a bargain in Gomes.  Victorino(GG) was needed in right field at Fenway so there was really no sense to picking up Ross once we got Gomes.

Okay,,so some wanted the Sox to give Ross $8.5 mil.  What was he going to do for the Red Sox?  What has he done?

I was only responding to you bringing 'afford' into it

my point being we know they have plenty of cash

and buying the rye bread won't  change that

And the difference between Ross and Gomes is the same as the difference on Martin, Swisher, and Chavez combined.

never implied he was the fav

So you're saying that the Yankees trying to stay under the payroll tax, and the RS trying to stay under the payroll tax are completely different?

    yes

their starting points makes it impossible to compare their actions

once has to cut payroll with little to no flexibility

    the other is completely opposite

Or put another way, if Ichiro is not replacing Swisher, then who will play RF this year?

    gardner is replacing swisher
