Will Ben put an offer on Cano to drive up the price?

Report is saying Yankees will possibly have $300M payroll for next season.  They definitely will pursue Cano most aggresively.  They are reported to pursue Japanese dominant starter Tanaka, OF Carlos Beltran, and C Brian McCann.  If ARod gets suspended next season, they will have even more flexibility.  Sox would have at least moderate interests in all of them except Cano.  But will Ben place offers on all of them at least to drive up the market, especially on Cano?  I think Yanks made mistake announcing their payroll plan this early letting all of FAs know that they can control the market.

They would then have to trade the hobbit if Cano signed there.

The idea behind a bluff is that you have to be able to follow through.  When you cry 'wolf', there needs to be a legitimate threat of a wolf.  We had enough of a hand on Tex where the NYY couldn't afford to call our bluff.  They know there is no chance of us signing Cano.

The only thing that bluffing will do here is to make our next bluff easier to ignore.

What about the Tigers going after Cano?  Infante is a free agent this year.  Peralta is probably gone but they have Iglesias to replace him.

Tigers needs are the bullpen and then to sign Scherzer to a long term deal...Don't see them in the mix for another bat...not with Fielder and Cabrera both locked up long term for big money...
