Will Dustin Pedroia have a Jeter-like career with the Red Sox?

By the end of next season, Dustin Pedroia shoud have his 1000th Major League hit as he enters his prime at age 29.  Even with Gonzalez, Pedroia may be the face of this franchise and a guy that it will be tough to picture wearing any other uniform.

Assuming that he remains a memeber of the Red Sox throughout his career and assuming that his best days are still ahead of him (which is likely the case), Dustin Pedroia may be looking at his 3000 Major League hit in his late 30's.

    Thoughts?

I believe that Pedroia will have as successful a career as Jeter.
Pedroia is the face of the Red Sox.

But when it comes to women, nobody can top Jeter.

SPC, i've got mad respect for DP, it's not gonna be easy, he'll need to increase his offensive output before his mid 30's, he's entering his 5th(?) full season and he's logged only one 200 hit season (granted he's had a season derailed by injury) he's definitely got the Jeter-lke drive, he'll need a good number of really good, injury-free seasons, maybe not cut back but monitor his all-out style, certainly some luck coupled with a long number of good Sox teams...he may or may not fall short of Jeter's title number, but imo he's on his way to a great career..

Agreed Jete, Pedi is made of the same leather, but im thimking Jeter is a slight step above Pedi! That makes Pedi no less a player! Then again, he was never suposed to make it this far, he is to small to play major league baseball. Put nothing beyond his grasp, or he will do it to spite us doubters.

Is someone questioning if he is the face of our Sox? Agon is a great quiet leader, but Pedi is the heart that makes the head live!

I would find it tough for pedey to do it but not impossible.

Remember, Jeter came out of high school giving him a few extra years over pedey.

Pedroia is quite similar, but I'm guessing he'll end up with between 2K and 2,600 hits; that still more than Mantle, DiMaggio, Kiner, Greenberg, Cronin, and perhaps TW & Ruth.

Jeter started his career earlier than Pedey and has played 155+ games most of his career. Factors that play against Pedey reaching 3K. Also, I am concerned about his recent injury, as to whether or not that raises its ugly head sometime. I love Pedey's attitude, the way he plays all out all the time and his cockiness. Every short man's hero!.... I do hope he gets there, but doubt it.

Derek Jeter collected his 1,000th hit on September 25, 2000, at age 26.

Dustin Pedroia entered today's game with 762 career hits. At Pedroia's current age, Jeter had accumulated 1,249 hits. At that point Jeter had played on four World Series champions while Pedroia has played on one. Each has won Rookie of Year honors, but only Pedroia has been his league's MVP.

3,000 hits is tough.......But at this point in time compared to jeter's first 5 seasons, Pedey has already had a better career in that span.  Period.  No more heter comparisons......

Dustin Pedroia's first five-and-a-half seasons (2006-11) compare to Derek Jeter's first five seasons (1995-99):

    Pedroia 642 G, .302/.373/.456/.829, 21.9 WAR*
    Jeter 638 G, .318/.389/.465/.855, 22.6 WAR*

    Up the middle position,
    Solid defense
    great leadership
    Lots of intangibles
solid above average offensive player with some power but not a lot.
    surrounded by great talent

Am I talking about Jeter or Pedroia?

Just like most RS hitters, he also has a .327/.291 BA and .879/.779 OPS Home Road Split. Other measures are similar. Don't expect a response from that crank.

    nope

he might be even a better player

but I still say his playing style

    is writing checks

that his body won't be able to cover for the long term

     that's not meant 2B a knock,

    just a prediction &  a compliment

I don't think the Sox philosophy of taking pitches helps PD get there.   But PD has the intangibles going for him, he is a great leader.   He will get the "C" when Vtek retires.

Pedroia is about 400 hits behind Jeter at the same age. Not impossible for him to reach 3000, but he would need a LONG career.

He's a hell of a player but I don't think its likely for him.  He doesn't have the physical gifts that will sustain him over the long haul, I think you'll see him top 2,000 though.

The odds are against Pedroia, if nothing else he was a year older than Jeter for his first full season as opposed to Jeter.  If you are correct by the time that he gets his 1000th hit he'll  have just turned 29 years old.  By the time Jeter hit that same age he had more than 1400 hits.  That two solid seasons of production.

That is not to say Pedroia can't do it. In fact I'd wager that Pedroia has had more then a few instances in his life were people bet against him and he made them sorry for it.  And, I think he has the best chance of anybody that is currently on the RS and that includes Gonzalez.  Its merely a function of can he remain healthy and stay productive.  If he can do the former than I think he'll get the latter.  It will be interesting to watch though.

Re: Will Dustin Pedroia have a Jeter-like career with the Red Sox?

A closer comp might be Dustin Pedroia's former Arizona State teammate, Texas secondbaseman Ian Kinsler, who is one year older than Pedroia.

Kinsler has 751 career hits while being valued at 22.7 WAR* in 704 games. Pedroia has 762 hits while being valued at 21.9 WAR* in 642 games.

Pedey and Agon both have real shots. It will take hard work and they would have to stay as productive as they are now for the rest of their careers.

That being said The next person to do it will be Damon in 3 seasons
