winter meetings, who takes the lead ? Ben or Larry

Red Sox Notes: Lavarnway, Saltalamacchia, Cherington

As we gear up for an exciting week in Nashville, Tennessee, many are wondering if the Red Sox will make a major move as they look to turn the tide. What are the odds of them making a splash? “I can’t handicap it," General Manager Ben Cherington told reporters, including Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe (via Twitter). "You can’t rule it out. I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. I think if there’s a deal that we feel really makes the organization stronger short and long term, we’ll pursue it. Some of those could fit into that category.” Here's more out of Boston..

Larry is not needed at the winter meetings. Let Ben do his job. He can call Larry if needed.

Larry's input should end at telling Ben what the budget is each year for the next five years.  Maybe put a $ limit on the single contracts that cannot be exceeded without approval.  And maybe a list of prospects that are off-limits without approval.  There have been GMs like Minaya and Thomas that will sign almost any piece of paper if it is in the GM's short-term best interests, regardless of the long-term implications.

Why would anyone expect the GM to work alone on anything especially personnel moves? NO business would why would you expect BC to?

The only business where one person makes all personnel moves is a small business. Any larger business all hires go thru multiple layers before being hired or in this including trades. I'm sure Farrell will also be involved as well as LL and others.

MLB is no longer Charley Finely and Tom Yawkey making trades over vodka Martina's at the hotel bar.

Speculation starting that Red Sox will enter Hamilton market

    - Could the Boston Red Sox become a player for Josh Hamilton?

While several less-monied teams have been speculated as players for the superstar outfielder, some suggest to keep an eye on the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have shown interest in some very useful free agents such as Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew and their ownCody Ross. But a few wonder whether they may aim even higher.

"Boston wants to do something big and it wouldn't shock me if they became players for Josh Hamilton,'' one competing GM said.Red Sox owner John Henry gave a succinct answer when asked what he'd like to do this winter.

    "Improve the team,'' he said.

The Red Sox have all but ruled out Zack Greinke. They don't believe he's right for their market, though don't feel too sorry for Greinke, as he'll have the Angels, Dodgers, Rangers and many others pursuing him.

The Red Sox admit they are giving some thought to Hamilton. They need two outfielders, and the belief has been that they are more inclined to fill multiple holes with multiple medium-priced players than go for the big splash in the wake of the failure that was the Carl Crawford contract.

However, with Crawford dispatched (along with Adrian Gonalzez and Josh Beckett), they have a lot of money, and it is known they have at least checked in on free-agent outfieler Michael Bourn. The impression left at the GM meetings was that they were involved in more things than anyone else.

"We have a lot of flexibility,'' owner John Henry said.

Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said here that they are "looking at'' Hamilton. The Brewers, Orioles and maybe the Braves are seen as possibilities for Hamilton.

The Red Sox have the ability to beat all those teams in a bidding situation if they desire. And Henry suggested the dissolution of his investment business won't hurt the team. "It's had no impact on me financially,'' Henry said.

He didn't mention anything about Hamilton. But the speculation is just getting started

Okay here it goes, my best kimsaysthis impersonation:

Why is that Yankee fans cannot find their own team forums rather than come here and mock our Red Sox? Why do so many so-called Sox fans here condone such behaviour? I don't understand any of this. Surely you Yankee fans can find another place to hang out.

You're way off base with that comment for two reasons.

1st. The Sox don't need any help in being mocked. They themselves are doing a good job of that.

2nd. Zac actually see's things a lot better than most posters here and is valued.
