Re: Would you sign Papelbon to a new deal?

i agree with the poster who said that he would like
to see Theo Epstein get a new deal....out of Boston.
Epstein is the boy wonder who has brought us a
highly overpaid Lackey, a stiff called Salty, and
has kept way too long guys like Tek and Wake, who
are but shadows of their former selves or selfs...I'm
not an English major by a long shot. Epstein has
also brought us Mike Cameron, a washed up stiff that
even the Mets didn't want, and has kept on Scutaro,
who is considerably past his prime. And,by the way,
why would you sign A Gon and Crawford two lefty
hitters in a park with a 380 ft. right field, when
neither of them is a real hr hitter like A Rod or
    Tex ??

Papelbon will sign elsewhere.    He's said a few times that he'll test the market.
Even with $$$ coming off the books, the Sox will look elsewhere also.

Absolutely NOT!!..   He wants top dollar at a position that can be vastly overrated.  Theo should pull a Billy Beane,   Biuld up his save numbers and either trade him at the deadline if an opportunity presents itself or just let him walk as type a status and take the picks...

Re: Would you sign Papelbon to a new deal?

    2 years x 12.5 = 25M

No 3 year high base contract. The risk is quite high for the two years, but the better alternatives of proven strong closers is simply not there. Over a long season, a strong first 3 is very important, so subtraction doesn't make the Red Sox a better team. If a team trumps that with a 3rd high base year or a record base, the money can be spent in better places because it leaves a lot money on the table. There is a tipping point, as the better run smaller market teams are a good example.

Since Papelbon is going to go FA, a good thing, there is no chance of making the same mistake made on Beckett. His value won't go up, but it could go down.

He is in his prime and is showing signs of old.  I am not sold that Bard is ready to handle the closing duties.  He has not look that good and has lost velocity.  His stuff is hitable now that it is 96 and not 100.  His offspeed stuff has not been sharp, so time will tell but you  can never have enough arms.

For the money he wants let him walk and take the 2 draft picks.

A lot of people take it for granted that this is Papelbon's last year in Boston, and Daniel Bard is the closer of the future. Are you comfortable with that idea, or would you like to see Pap remain the closer for the long term?
