    Yankee empty seats???

Sorry if this is old hat, but I am stunned at the number of empty seats in the luxery section at Yankee Stadium. This whole series is has appeared that at least half of them have been empty. Does anyone know if they are not sold or are they sold and the people just don't show. I know the tickets are like a grand or even two FOR ONE GAME but damn, that is embarrasing for MLB. The greatest rivalry in sports and half the seats on camera are empty.

Old hat. Yanks know that but their strategy is to wait for the fat cats from Wall Street to come sooner or later and buy those seats. NYC has more fat cats who don't care about money than any other city. You should be aware that the celebrities won't sit behind the plate so that they won't be on camera.

    Re: Yankee empty seats???

thanks for your know it all response, but I was looking for a bit more insight. If half of the seats are empty on a beautiful weekend night in May for the greatest rivalry in sports, I can't imagine how it looks on a Tuesday night against the Royals. There has to be a "tipping point' at some stage where teams price themselves out.
So the Yanks keep the price high convinced they will be in contention in August and the Fat Cats will join the bandwagon. Fat Cat baseball. Seems pornographic.

    I agree it's a tad embarrassing

and they have lowered the prices from day 1

thing is, at those crazy  high prices I don't think they  have to

sell to many to cover the empty seats that would be sold at normal prices

There has to be a "tipping point' at some stage where teams price themselves out.

    yup, I imagine so

and then they will just lower them

I was told that at times during nationally televised games, fans from the stratosphere were invited to sit in the boxes to give the impression all the seats were filled.  I have my doubts about this though.

yeah, not to judge from appearances, but some of those folk don't look like they would spend a grand for a seat. Do any of you guys know what they cost exactly?

oh and it's even sadder that New Yorkers have to pay such outrageous prices when they are the ones that paid for the stadium to be built to begin with.

Another problem NYS has is that a lot of people spend the whole game in the concourse because it like a sports bar.

    Are you profiling????.......just kiddingLaughing

When I used to gamble seriously in Vegas, I wouldn't shave or change my clothes for about 3 day so I wouldn't draw attention to the fact I was a big-time card counter.

profiling??? good one. and great story about your Vegas look. I used to go to my girlfriend's poetry readings wearing my Bruins game shirt just to tick her off.
but a baseball game can be an interesting people watching place for sure.

some of the posters got it right: Prices are too high only the rich can go but they usually go to 1 or 2 games but never to all 3 games, people go into the concourse seat on the bar etc etc and some were afraid of the rain today sunday. So is a collection of issues that is making this new stadium look worse then the Marlins football stadium.  Also some of those die hard yank fans that live outside of the city(90% of then i would say) come from NJ,LI,SI and upstate ny so they spend most of the money on commuting. This is not the case in fenway at all, even the most expensive seats are sold.

I've seen more people in the stands at a Royals game in September, freezing rain, 3 rain delays, midnight, down 10-0 in the 8th, and already 33 games out of first.

    Re: Yankee empty seats???

True, they have tried to "paper the house" (as they say in the theatre) but there were four things working against MLB and giving the impression of empty seats.

    1) It's a Sunday night game and a lot of people have to go to work or school the next day, so the temptation is to stay home. Fans know that these Bronx Brawls tend to run long. Heck, last night's game was 3:41.  It was almost like following a game on the West Coast.

    2) It is outrageously expensive to park, eat, buy the usual pennants and programs, etc.  And yes those seats behind home plate are outrageous.   So people decide to stay home, where the food is cheaper, you don't have to pay for parking, and the bathrooms are cleaner.

    3) Rain. Rain. Rain.

    4) Remember that Yankee Stadium is cavernous.  Attendance was +47,000 - enough to fill Fenway and have a spillover onto Yawkey Way, but in a stadium that holds 52,345 (including standing room), people are bound to notice a few empty seats.

The super rich (most probably grew up away from NY) buy them and only use them for an occasional night out. They are NY pink hatters who couldn't name Robertson. The rest remain unsold b/c of price I bet.

The oversight on the part of the organization was that their fancy new colliseum, built on the backs of the city taxpayers and relying on these 'fat cats' to fill the seats, was out of tune with the times.  The fact of the matter is that, while there are still a few fat cats around, the economic bottom out of recent years has seen the exodus of many fat cats from Gotham, and the downgrade of many more fat cats to shivering alley cat.  The city itself has come through relatively intact, but this ain't the haven for fat cats anymore.  Those seats aren't going to be filled until October, if the Yankees are still playing then.

No, because when the planning and everything was going on the economy was in much better shape, the housing market bubble hadn't burst and the dollar was stronger.

Are you saying that the higher ups in the Yankee organization should have seen this coming when most of the top economists and big players on Wall Street didn't?

Babe, I am only saying that in the sense that the 'top economists' and 'big players on wall street' should have seen it coming too.  There were many intelligent people who have been calling in the wilderness for years that there was no way the economy could continue to ride on a wave of massive credit with massive reduction of production underlying it.

I noticed the empty seats myself, and not just the seats directly behind home plate (which have been half-empty since that stadium opened), but even in the grandstand sections above and around the dugouts. I also found it somewhat shocking that the Friday night game was only their 2nd sellout this season - the first being Opening Day.

    Re: Yankee empty seats???

The seats that are empty are unsold due to cost. The Yankees have NOT lowered the cost, feeling that if they do, they will have to give back some $$ to thye fans who already paid full boat. They do not allow fans to "move on down" to better setas, but some of the ushers can be "convinced" to look the other way.
According to some in the know, YES network has been advised to not speak nor show the empty seats on telecasts....
