The biggest problem that the Red Sox have is their inept Manager. As long as he is at the helm, the freefall will continue.

If it were my call, i would ####-can rihjt now. The Yankees have been able to make up ground because of tactical on-field decisions that Francona...Constant meddling with the batting order, leeaving Tavarez and Wakefield in the game far too long, playing Wily Mo, other.

I see Francona as too soft on his personnel. I am for dumping Francona asap...Perhaps Epstein too.

To all Yankee Fans, let's not put all our eggs in one basket. If Joba pitches and inning, he will be sat for a game. If he pitches two innings, he will sit for two games. The Yanks need to stay consistent with RISP and the starters have to keep giving us quality starts. I think Clemons protecting A-Rod will go a long way in this teams run. It kind of reminds me of when Varitek went after A-Rod. They need to remain a team and I think the kids will keep them there.

There is nothing wrong with the Sox. We are still in first place and have hit a rough patch.

The media in Boston is the probelm. Instead of getting behind the team, the media wants to pick the team apart and make a bad situation worse.

You want to fix the Red Sox, have the reports put a sock in their mouths

The Yankees will take over first by the end of the month and will win going away. The only question for the Sox is making it as a wild card--and as they have been been a consistent .500 team since late May it looks like another wait till next year season. Theo's brilliant trade deadline move has been especially damaging not because Gagne has morphed into Dick Drago but because of the inevitable effect on Okajima, baseball's best setup man who has taken an incalculable blow to his sense of the team's confidence in him. My guess is whether or not the "real" Eric Gagne ever turns up, the real Hideki Okajima is probably lost to the Boston Red Sox.

You can chalk up two losses this weekend to Francona and Gagne. For some reason, Tito seems to think there's this formula where Gagne pitches the eighth no matter what. On Friday, Gagne pitched to two lefties with an All-Star reliever in Okajima available. On Sunday, Okajima still should have been in because he hasn't blown up yet, but Gagne comes in and sucks again. Stick with the best 1-2 punch in baseball: Ojakima and Papelbon and use Gagne as a nice late-inning reliever, but not a set 8th inning guy. And, yeah, we could use more than 3 runs a game against Baltimore...c'mon offense!

I think the biggest problem is the bench...there is not one player that can come off the bench and do somehting well above average...Mirabelli is a necessary evil and Cora is a solid utility infielder, but Hinskie and Pena are useless players...in retrospect the move for Gagne was not really what they needed...I understand that Donnelly went down and they felt they needed another right handed set up man, but Delcarmen looks like the real deal and Timlin, if put into a game without runners on base, has performed extremely well...plus, with Lester and/or Gabbard assuming the 5th spot in the rotation once Schilling returned, Tavares became yet another right handed option for mop up innings and/or long relief chances...to make matters more confusing Lopez, the lefty specialist, was then optioned down to Pawtucket due to limitations of remaining options for Pena (a useless player not not worth out right releasing) and Snyer (a semi useful player and, again, not worth losing outright)...all of these moves, plus the addition of Gagne seems to have rattled the chemistry of what was the team's greatest strength; the bull pen...and, the team's greatest weakness, the bench, was not improved...at this point, in my opinion, it might be worth waiving Hinskie and bringing up Ellsbury for late inning defense and pinch running...then, perhaps Snyder or Tavares needs to head to the DL for an extended stay so Lopez can return as I feel they desperately need that specialty lefty in the pen...Drew and Crisp must play every day, without rest, and they must step up and hit and provide stellar defense...Cora can play for Lugo (showing his true defensive ways of late) every 3rd or 4th game...I feel that Lowell needs to bat behind Manny and that Crisp should bat behind Lugo so, if Lugo can get on base Coco can see fastballs as he can not hit breaking balls at all...the 8th and 9th inning situation of Okajima and Papelbon was working fabulousloy and it should NOT be tankered with...Gagne, Timlin, and Delcarmen can work the 6th and 7th innings on a "rest/match up" basis...Lopez then becomes the 1 at bat lefty specialist and you either have Tavares or Snyder for mop/long releif/spot starter...that is the way I see it, but none of it might matter as Big Papi is clearly hurt, Manny is clearly getting older, and the Yankee's lineup is showing no signs of slowing down; and it is a deep lineup with no holes or easy outs...where as the Sox have holes and a few easy outs...if the Sox wait until the roster's expand to make these moves, it might be too late...

meanwhile it does seems that the Yankees are catching a ton of breks with the schedule...after the break they caught Tornot after they had played 4 in Boston...now they are about to catch Anaheim after they play Boston...plus, they played KC 10 times to the Sox 6 and played the Pirates 3 times at home...the Sox had 3 west coast trips theat were long and difficult...look at the Yankee's west coast rips and compare the 2 and tell me which is tougher...any reason for this?

The problem with the Sox are:

Francona - why didn't he bring in Pap on Sunday in the 10th inning with runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs? Doesn't he know we need two stikeouts? Do you think Kyle Snyder is the guy to get K's? If the Sox don't get out of the 10th then there is no need for Paps to close.

Gagne - He has been terrible.

Overall offensive production - JD Drew has been a major disappointment. Lugo hit below .200 for the first half of the season. Manny and Ortiz have not hit the homers (Ortiz injuries)

Stupid mistakes - Manny especially. Today (Sunday) he gets thrown out at third on a ball that is inches away from the catcher. Lugo tries to bunt in the eighth, but the first two attempts are balls way out of the strike zone. Instead of 3-0, it is 1-2. Fly out to right.

I just got back from Baltimore today. I would compliment the Baltimore fans on their politeness, but I didn't see many of them. It's like being at a home game.

I did wear my Sox jersey to the games and was not insulted or yelled at so I guess they are polite. I was yelled at about my jersey on the walk back to the hotel Friday night but something told me from the area I was in that I should hold back from playful banter with the "gentlmen".

The Red Sox are not producing runs. I was praying that they would trade for Texeira, or some other big bat, before the trade deadline. When I read that they traded for Gagne, I was more upset that we gave Gabbard away, but I couldn't fault the the Sox brass for their reasoning. I think their idea of shutting down the starter after 6 or 7 innings and using two or three pitchers to finish the games is a good way to preserve the starting pitching for the stretch run. However, we're not scoring enough runs. What's wrong with Ortiz and Manny?? If Ortiz needs to go on the DL, then do it now so that he'll be ready for the stretch run. They can then bring up someone from the minors to fill in until He's ready to come back. Sheesh, steal a base, put on the hit and run, be more patient at the plate, stop swinging at bad pitches. I can't remember who the hitting coach is, but he should be fired imediately, he has turned both Manny, and Ortiz into average hitters

And about today's game..........What the hell was Francona thinking?? Timlin was pitching great, why did he remove him and put Okajima in?? Ok, so he does that, and pulls him to put Snyder in, then pulls him to put Gagne in, after he allready gave up several runs in his last appearances. Did anybody tell Francona that the Yankess had allready won, and oh by the way, we're in a freakin penant race?? These are the games we need to be winning, and we're throwing them away. I usually agree with how Francona handles the pitching staff but this time, I think it was totally wrong to put Gagne in.

Do you hear those footsteps?? That's the Yankess crawling up our back, and unless our bats wake up, and our relief pitching settles down, we'll be rooting for who ever is playing against the Yankees in October.

The reason the Red Sox aren't scoring runs is very obvious; Ortiz is hurt, and hurt bad. He probablly should have gone on the DL and had knee surgery 2 months ago. There is no team in baseball that can survive the loss (for all pratical purposes) of a player the likes of Big Papi. He will be back and healthy next year, but lets hope it is not to late for this year...

As for the bullpen, so far Gagne has sucked, but I don't expect that to continue. Baseball is based on averages, and his numbers have been pretty damn good. It also does seem like Francona has fallen asleep at the switch a little lately, but to think that he has forgotten how to manage is stupid. Does anyone remember '04? Do you really think he had nothing at all to do with that? He just hsn't found exactly the right buttons yet. It's kind of hard when your best player can barely play (see above)...
