Robb's Farm & Ice Cream in South Glastonbury CT makes its own ice cream with farm-fresh ingredients. As you walk around eating your ice cream you are able to see pigs, chickens, donkeys, miniature horses, an emu, and goats - great for the kids. -

England's MicroCreamery in Haverhill and Newburyport. Best homemade ice cream ever. Terrific flavors and very creamey. Great friendly staff. -

Meletharb's in Wakefield, MA is the very best homemade ice cream with fresh ingredients and ever-changing flavors, fun atmosphere, friendly staff. Brown's in York, Maine is a close second. -

Benson's in Boxford - best ice cream in New England (especially in season blueberry, peach), and the height of regular scoop size is breathtaking! All time favs - reverse chocolate chip and coffee malted frap... -

Travel out to Hadley in Western Mass, and try the ginger ice cream at Flayvors of Cook Farm. Incredible!
Hadley is asparagus country.....and believe it or not, they've actually come out with an asparagus-flavored ice cream! Those brave enough to try it say it's really tasty.

Dolce Freddo Gelato in Methuen (http://www.dfgelato.com/index.html) has the BEST gelato with a huge variety. A must visit!!

Try their coffee ice cream, Guernsey Cookie (coffee Oreo)!!, Holstein (chocolate with white chocolate chips and almonds), Indian Pudding, the frozen version of an old New England dessert, or anything else scooped from this roadside stand just south of Route 44. -

This was a very Massachusetts-centric list, which I guess is to be expected. Hands down the best ice cream in New England is from Ashley's (locations in New Haven and Hamden, CT). And best of all, they're open year-round!
