Your article of 6/20/10 lists only one place on the South Shore! From Quincy to the Cape Cod canal you will find lots of great local seafood. My favorite is the The Tavern in Scituate. (Many years ago it was known as the Blue Mooring.) The Seafood Platter is enormous! Great fried clams, onion rings, scallops...

Woodman's is over rated and over priced. Clam Box is best. HoJos was good...bring it back! If I ordered Clam Chowder, and the waiter brought me any color but white, I'd send it back. There's no such thing as stuffies, except when you got a code in da dose. They're called baked stuffed clams. Any recommendations for steamers?
    Posted by adagio52

Perhaps you've never been to RI?  Stuffies exist and are stuffed quahogs...

My favorite places for clams and stuffies are Flo's in Middletown and Portsmouth and Anthony's Seafood on Aquidneck Ave in Middletown.

As a New Englander living in the Midwest, each trip home requires a visit to my two favorite clam shacks:

For THE BEST fried clams ever:  Larry's Clam Bar, Plaistow, NH
For THE BEST steamers and lobster:  Brown's Lobster Pound, Seabrook, NH

My trips home are far too infrequent.  I miss my New England - and the best seafood in the world!

PJ's Family Restaurant, 2616 Route 6, South Wellfleet.  They have great fried clams and fried seafood with the best french fries and onion rings on the lower cape.  They have been in business since 1971 and once you go there you'll notice that the fried clams are so good that you want to go again.  Highly recommended

Normally I LOVE these lists and often visit the recommended places...but after this list I realized that the person who put this list together didn't do their homework.  2 places in New Hampshire?  And in Rye only?  Seabrook and Hampton too blue collar for you?  What about Salisbury or Newburyport in Mass?  Four places that TRUE fisherman not only catch their own seafood, but run their own shacks and restaurants.  Shame on you for forgetting these places.  The fishermen and their businesses shouldn't be ignored unless all your running is foo foo lists.

    Gene's

    The Bite

    Aunt Carrie's

The Lobster Shack at Twin Lights

Howard Johnson's ought to get credit for spreading the taste for fried clams beyond New England (at least beyond the people who vacationed on the Cape and in Maine). Howard brought clams to us in Western New York back in the day--along with the concept of 28 flavors of ice cream.

Brown's in Seabrook, NH! This place is great! AND it's BYOB! In fact, you can bring anything you want, as long as it's not on the menu. I've seen it all...table clothes, cheese plates, beer, wine, etc. You can dine inside or out, first come first serve for the tables.

If you've never been, do yourself a favor and check it out!

I live on Cape Ann and your list is a good one. I have one addition that is in Gloucester. At Stage Fort Park, The Cupboard has fresh daily fried clams; I know the clamdigger and shucker. The owner/cook is from Georgia. Essex clams meets southern fried. Stage Fort Park is also great for kids. Response to What are your favorite New England clam shacks?:
Best fried clams on the North Shore (Why go anywhere else?) 1) The Clam Box in Ipswich 2) Essex County Seafood in Essex 3) Village Restaurant in Essex 4) Farnham's in Essex 5) Woodman's (distant 5, sorry)

Well, it’s amazing. The miracle has been done. Hat’s off. Well done, as we know that “hard work always pays off”, after a long struggle with sincere effort it’s done.

I'm from England (not NEW England, ENGLAND in the British Isles!) and I've never even heard of a 'clam shack', I've never even eaten a CLAM!  Not even Clam Chowder, though I've heard of THAT!
Can somebody tell me what a clam tastes like?  I'm intrigued.Undecided
