Lots of great places mentioned here. The Clam Box in Ipswich is pretty hard to beat, but others that deserve mention...
The Village in Essex.. not enough props here, and they are one of the best. Great clams, but what makes this place a great restaurant is the overall quality and freshness of the ingredients in everything they make.
In Wells, ME, nobody mentioned Billy's Chowder House. Visited a couple months ago, exceptional fried clams. Really amazing... quite possibly the best ever.
Love Arnolds in Eastham on the Cape, but Friendly Fisherman is every bit as good if not better. Tough choice when you're down there, I always try to hit em both! -

I've had fried seafood all over the Cape and the North Shore. Johnson's in Groton, MA, has the best fried seafood I have ever tasted. The clams are as good as you can get and the fried scallops are are easily the best in the state. The portions are good too. -

In Response to Re: What are your favorite New England clam shacks?:some other thoughts to add for the North Shore . . . Gloucester -- try the Causeway Restaurant . . . all food is outstanding Gloucester -- The Lobster Pool . . . much like Woodman's without the tourism, but also offers great ocean views Gloucester -- if on a budget, but want fresh seafood and don't care about atmosphere, try House of Mitch for lunch Rockport -- Roy Moore Lobster . . . only lobster, no fried stuff, but excellent Annisquam -- Diva's (in season) . . . you won't be disappointed over in Essex, the usual suspects have been name and rightfully so . . . saw someone mentioned The Village Restaraunt -- great place, high marks for the shrimp buschettaLove the Causeway go there every year, when we go on vacation from Michigan.

Bagaduce Lunch, on the shore of the Bagaduce River in Sedgewick, Maine. It might be a difficult location to find for you folks from the south, but if you're willing to drive 4+ hours, engaging in the many other delights the Maine coast has to offer, and, once arriving, you are willing to wait a bit, the best fried clams, clam cakes, crab cakes and steamed (never boiled) lobsters, mussels and clams await your tastebuds. -
