Little Jack's on Rte 1A in north end of Hampton Beach is best NH Clam Shack by far. Only bad thing is their very short summer season.

What are your favorite New England clam shacks?

OMG I went to the original McCrays in Westport when I was a kid in the '50"s. It was a few miles toward Fall River on R going away from Lincoln Park. The clams were to drool for!!!

McCrays II  in Tiverton, RI. The best kept secret in New England. The first McCrays Clam Shack closed in the 80's I think. It was across the street from Lincoln Park in Dartmouth and nobody I know can understand why it closed...it always seemed to be packed. It dissappeared for about 20 years and from what I understand a former worker has the famous recipe and opened up McCrays II a few years ago in Tiverton.  It's a hole in the wall kind of dumpy looking plaza but the clams are great.

What are your favorite New England clam shacks?

In Portland try The Old Port Sea Grille on Commercial Street for fried clams: Sweet, tasty and fried right. I think the chef used to be a clam. It's not a shack...it's a reastaurant. Don't bother with the touristy shacks in town. Let the mosquitos chew on the New Yorkers...Eat these babies in nice cool AC with a great raw bar. North of Portland try Day's Crabmeat in Yarmouth on Route 1. The crab rolls are amazing and they have all the other battered and fried selections as well. Great views of the marsh and river.

Try Lobsta Land in Gloucester, Ma. I had the best clams of my life there, and I lived in Essex for 23 years! They were cooked perfectly and tasted so fresh.

Grew up in Hamilton Mass... The Claim Box was always a favorite. Liked Woodman's also and sometimes Farnam's. Went to school at UNH. I would necessarily recommend it, but I didn't see any mention of Newick's near Newington, NH.

What are your favorite New England clam shacks?

Former owners and managing chief sold 1640 Hart House many years ago and opened Ipswich Clambake and Seafood now just south of the famous Clambox on Rte 1 same side of road. It sells fresh fish, clams, stuffed clams, etc, fresh & frozen entrees, specialty products AND great fried clams, chowder, lobster rolls, fish & chips, sandwiches, hamburgers, daily specials, ect.
It's a secret so don't tell any one outside your family. No lines & fast service.
There is parking in front and back. There are few tables inside. It's mostly take-out - like to the Ipswich dock and watch clammers sell their catch - at almost high tide, or swimmers @ Pavillion Beach or visit the So. Main Street Information booth and exhibition rooms the walk to the Ipswich Riverwalk foot bridge to downtown and around. Munche away, but, please take your trash home and don't feed any waterfowl.
Say 'Hi' to Tom & wife Joan Pepin and his Aunt Patti Cormier from howesal.
