Anyone who's ever lugged their own gear on tour likely did so with Motorhead's "We Are the Road Crew" playing in their head.  An album about overcoming obstacles and pillaging as you go, _Ace of Spades_ is required soundtrack material.

Trompe Le Monde - The Pixies

I can't think of another album that captures the rhythm and movement of a road trip better. Besides the Pixies are one of the best and most influential bands of the past 30 years.

There's really not just one--U2's War or maybe a greatest hits, the Beatles' White Album, Springsteen's Born in the USA, Paul Simon's Graceland, Peter Gabriel's So, Dire Straits Money for Nothing....

Definitely ABB - Live at Fillmore East.  Nothing beats this double live album with a 30+ minute Mountain Jam.  For single disc albums you can spin on repeat, I would look to more recent albums than ABB like Barenaked Ladies - Rock Spectacle and Dave Matthews Band - The Best of What's Around Vol. 1.

Re: What is your ultimate road trip album?

OMG -- the Pixies are most certainly influential -- but if I had to listen to Black Francis screeching at me for more than 5-7 miles at a time I'd shoot the car over a cliff.

Burning your own road trip CDs are the way to go ...

I call this my St. Christopher's Mix:

Spirit in the Sky -- Norman Greenbaum
God Save the Queen -- Sex Pistols
    Hallelujah -- Ryan Adams
    Hallelujah -- Jeff Buckley
My Sweet Lord -- George Harrison
Jesus Is Just Alright -- Doobie Bros.
Jesus Just Left Chicago -- ZZ Top
When Jesus Left Birmingham -- John Mellencamp
    Personal Jesus -- Depeche Mode
    Heaven Knows -- Robert Plant
    In God’s Country -- U2
Living on a Prayer -- Bon Jovi
    Divine Thing -- Soup Dragons
If I Ever Lose My Faith -- Sting
    Counting Blue Cars -- Dishwalla
One Of Us -- Joan Osborne
Knocking on Heaven’s Door -- Guns & Roses
Hard On for Jesus -- Dandy Warhols
Say Hello to Heaven -- Temple of the Dog
    Jesus, Etc -- Wilco
    Heaven -- Los Lonely Boys
