If Super 8 was a love letter to 1980s-style filmmaking, this adventure story looks to pay a similar form of tribute with its tech-savvy teens and their bicycle-based campaign to help the alien life form they discover. There’s even a character named “Munch” – a direct nod to The Goonies. Relativity Media isn’t established enough as a distributor to create a blockbuster hit, but Munch and his pals could still perform well if their real-life peers turn up on opening weekend. Disney, who developed and shot the film, sold the worldwide distribution rights to Relativity Media. The first trailer was released on December 12, 2013. Earth to Echo premiered on June 14, 2014 at the Los Angeles Film Festival as part of a family film showcase, and it opens in theaters nationwide on July 2, 2014.
