With over 150 authors on hand, the Boston Book Festival, held at venues in Copley Square, is the place to be this month. The annual event aims to promote a culture of reading and ideas and enhances the vibrancy of the city. For three days, book lovers and aspiring writers can attend sessions on everything from arts to science, and participate in interactive workshops and seminars on writing. Featured adult authors speaking at this year's festival include Salman Rushdie, Wes Craven and local legends Mike Barnicle and Kevin Cullen. Featured children's authors include Tomie dePaola, Lowis Lowry, Kate DiCamillo, Marissa Meyer, and Maggie Stievfater. Kids and teens have tons of activities also, including presentations, workshops, crafts, stories on stage, and the chance to meet some beloved characters such as Bad Kitty, Curious George, and Strega Nona. The festival also includes a street fair, featuring booksellers, MFA programs and nonprofits, and a food truck or two. Performers from Berklee College of Music will provide entertainment on the outdoor stage. Most events are free; however, there are some ticketed programs. Some workshops and sessions require pre-registration to ensure you get a seat. Thurs., Oct. 17 - Sat., Oct. 19. All ages. Most events are free. See website for details about priced events and program times, which vary. Copley Square, 560 Boylston St., Boston.
