Students in urban campuses can walk or take public transportation nearly everywhere they need to go, and rural schools typically provide shuttles from dorms to academic buildings and off-campus commercial centers. According to AAA, the first 10,000 miles on a new sedan cost an average of $5,800 in expenses including gas, maintenance, and insurance. Add the expenses and hassles that come with driving in New England -- snow tires, hours spent scraping ice off the windshield, and expensive or elusive parking spaces -- and the campus shuttle suddenly seems appealing.
