OK, gang, get ready to vote starting tomorrow. I've posted all of the eligible photos for our first-ever contest; you can see them all here: August Contest Entries.

There are 243 entries -- quite a haul! But there also were 31 ineligible photos that are missing out. Here's why:

> I disqualified photos of a flower, a meadow, a marina, a canal, and a skyline because none of them fit the theme of "At the beach."

> Three photos were submitted after the Aug. 31 deadline.

> And 5 photographers violated the rules by submitting more than one photo, and have not responded to my emails asking them to remove the contest tags from all but one of their photos so that I could keep one of their photos in the contest. Alas, unless they do that by tonight, they're out.

As I've said before, the range and quality of these photos is just stunning -- and heartening that we have such a thriving community of amateur photographers in New England. In the coming months, I am not going to post every contest entry ... it takes too much time and is preventing me from posting other interesting items about local photographers, camera clubs, photo shoots and other events, and more tipsheets and suggestions.

However, we do have a method for showing you the contest entries as they arrive; I'll introduce that to you as soon as we start getting some September entries. Speaking of which ... watch for an announcement about that in a bit.

Thanks again, and as always, if you have a question about this contest or anything else, just email us at

Life and wildlife in Madagascar
For years before I started college, I knew I wanted to spend a semester studying abroad, but I wasn't sure where. By my junior year at Brandeis, I made up my mind to travel somewhere off the beaten path, and, of course, Madagascar is pretty far off the beaten path for someone like me....
An essay about Rebirth Workshops
Now that it's been several months since I returned from a week-long Rebirth Workshop in Mississippi, I'm happy to look back and provide an overview of what we did that made it such an intense experience for me as a photographer....

Thinking of ditching your separate camera and moving to just using your phone for all your photos? What apps should you go for? Instagram made headlines recently after being bought by Facebook for $1 billion. What does it include, and what else is out there?...
