Several things going on and coming up in the Queendom of RAW:

> The October "Get Close" contest ends at midnight Friday, so add those tags or upload those photos as soon as you can. We'll give photos added to brand-new Flickr accounts a couple of days to show up, and then a Globe photographer will help us narrow the voting choices to 50. Everybody here at and El Globo are flat-out with election coverage, so if our Voting Machine doesn't get posted until the end of next week, please understand why.

There's more:

> I've added a bunch of new photos to the October contest gallery, and will keep adding until the last photo has arrived. We're getting close to 200 photos, and the quality is consistently excellent.

> Staying on the topic of the monthly contests: The poll for the November theme closes at midnight Friday, and right now it's neck-and-neck-and-neck among Unforgettable Faces, Motion, and Buildings at Night. Will be interesting to see which one wins! Meanwhile, check out the great suggestions some of you have posted at the bottom of that entry.

> I'm also continuing to add to the foliage gallery, but only photos that have already arrived -- the gallery is now closed. Instead, tomorrow I'll start soliciting photos for another timely topic ... sorry, it's a surprise ...

> Finally, don't forget the challenge assignment for photos that illustrate Democracy in Action in honor of Election Day. I understand it's a tough topic, but don't get too tangled up in the concept. Heck, even a street performer or somebody reading a book on a park bench is exercising rights and freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Besides, I just like posting your photos.

Life and wildlife in Madagascar
For years before I started college, I knew I wanted to spend a semester studying abroad, but I wasn't sure where. By my junior year at Brandeis, I made up my mind to travel somewhere off the beaten path, and, of course, Madagascar is pretty far off the beaten path for someone like me....
An essay about Rebirth Workshops
Now that it's been several months since I returned from a week-long Rebirth Workshop in Mississippi, I'm happy to look back and provide an overview of what we did that made it such an intense experience for me as a photographer....
