The "Get Close" October contest entries

Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff November 3, 2008 04:25 PM

The October "Get Close" contest is over, and we have 208 entries. I've posted all that are eligible in this gallery; if you don't see yours, let me know by dropping a line to raw@boston.com.

I'm not sure when we'll get the Voting Machine posted because of the election, but in the meantime, look over the entries in the gallery (click through to see it) below and start to make your choices.

And start shooting for the November contest: "Motion" was the winning theme. The deadline is midnight Nov. 30; again, we'll post the November Flickr Uploader as soon as we get out of the political thicket.

  1. is this just some of the winners or were some pictures that just weren't included for some reason or another?
because i do not see my image up here and i didn't realize that it had to be "up-close" pictures because the topic is simply "get close" and although that implies close-up images it says nothing about the images having to be close-up

  1. Hi, Patrick -- I hope the explanation at the link below will clarify. In general, though, yes, we're looking for close-ups ... photos that show subjects from close-in angles you don't usually see. Check out the longer explanation here:

I haven't finished posting all of the entries yet. I'm doing them gradually, so keep checking back for yours. Thanks.

  1. yea i read that shortly after i posted, and therefore felt a little bit crunchy about having said it. im pretty sure, however, that my image still applies as i shot it in a close-in angle you don't usually see sorta.

    thanks

  1. Just a suggestion - perhaps the next time you post one of these galleries (which are very cool, btw), could you post it behind a cut tag? It takes the blog much much longer to load on my computer when I have to wait for all the images in the gallery to load.

  1. I still have the problem of the thumbnails being cut off at the top and bottom of the larger box. Is it supposed to scroll?

  1. Hi, Julie -- apparently a "cut tag" is a LiveJournal thing ... not standard HTML, and not a Movable Type language, which is the blog we're using for this. I moved this gallery off the main RAW page so things don't get hung up for you.

  1. Hey, Alyssa ... the thumbnails get cut off because there are so many photos in the gallery. Odd that there isn't a scrollbar, though. I'll talk to the developer who built it and see what he can do. Might not be for awhile, though; he's pretty straight out on doo-dads for the election and some Globe projects, but we'll see.

  1. Teresa;
I've had my "Get Close" entry on my Flickr site since 10/20 and it hasn't appeared....yet.

I've had my Flickr account since last Aug. I've followed the directions in your link and double checked my account, tags, and uplink.....am I missing something?

    Thanks
    Bill

  1. Hi, Bill ... I probably just haven't gotten around to posting it in this gallery yet. I still have 20-30 photos to go, with more being uploaded every day. But it's a labor of love!!!

  1. What happens if I want to change the photo that I submitted for the October contest? I changed the tags on Flickr (removed them from the old photos and added them to the new one). But the slideshow you have up here must be manual since I still see the old photo. Do I have to keep the old photo am I allowed to change it?

  1. so why aren't the photos showing up for me. I'm trying to look at them to vote, but nothing's showing up

    Posted by S November 5, 08 12:45 PM
  1. Hi, S ... I'm not sure why the photos aren't showing up for you ... there are more than 200 of them, so it takes awhile for the gallery to load, but if you wait long enough, it should show up.

As for voting: This is just a gallery displaying the photos. We haven't posted the Voting Machine yet because the developer who does it for us has been straight out on fancy things for the election, and had a long night last night. As soon as he wakes up today, I'll bug him again. I'd like to open voting before the weekend.

  1. Hi Teresa,
Any update on the October voting?

Hey, shutterbug .... Yes, we're removing the photos that didn't make the Final 50 cut right now. Then we'll make sure that each of the Final 50 are in the Voting Machine, and we'll post it. Stay tuned!!!

NOVEMBER'S THEME Silhouettes

Convey emotion, set a mood, or create an air of mystery ... silhouettes can convey a lot in a handful of pixels. It's a challenging theme; position your subject in front of a light source, and expose for the light. One rule: Your photo must be taken this month.
