New forums, article comments, and profiles

Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff March 27, 2009 01:54 PM

Folks, this is what I've been spending my time on: We're launching new discussion forums, article comments, and profile pages Tuesday. You can read more about it here. So I'll post more March contest and wildlife galleries as soon as I can ... thanks.

  1. Since I much prefer forums over blogs, this is indeed great news. Your forum features address and hopefully will solve many problems I have with blogs. Thanks for listening. One problem not mentioned is your policy on posting images at the forums. Your blog accumulates so many images through a month on a single page, causing a very long load time. Hope that won't be the case with the forums.

A related subject regarding getting entry to your blog. I usually enter your blog by clicking on boston.com's Raw image. This gets me to a current blog entry, which I may or may not be interested in, such as:

    http://www.boston.com/community/photos/raw/wildlife1/

Once there, I have to click on the month in Archive to finally see what new entries and comments have been added:

    http://www.boston.com/community/photos/raw/2009/03/

Today quite by accident, instead of clicking on bostom.com's Raw image, I clicked on the Raw icon above the image, and ended up on a page I did not realize existed:

    http://www.boston.com/community/photos/raw/

I think this is a very good entry point to Raw, for blog or forum or whatever. A more prominent link on boston.com may help steer visitors to this page easier. For example, instead of the four boston.com links (Raw icon, Raw image, blog entry title, and More Photos in Raw), create a single link to the above page. Once on that page, a visitor can link to wherever he/she wants to.

    Just a thought.

  1. We launched last night, Dulcinea. If you visit the Boston.com homepage, look at the links in the upper left for a link that says, "Boston.comImprovements debut.."

NOVEMBER'S THEME Silhouettes

Convey emotion, set a mood, or create an air of mystery ... silhouettes can convey a lot in a handful of pixels. It's a challenging theme; position your subject in front of a light source, and expose for the light. One rule: Your photo must be taken this month.
Deadline: Midnight November 30
