July contest theme: Ripples

Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff July 5, 2009 11:50 PM

It's summer, so I'm looking for water shots. But not just any water shots; let's get water moving, gurgling, splashing, spraying, and yes, rippling. In other words, water in motion. As usual, we're looking for creativity and good composition; we'll also look favorably on the effective use of light on water, but it's not a requirement.

NOTE: We're changing our tagging system. Usually to enter our contests you tag your photos with Boston.com contest month. We're altering that in two ways:

1) Instead of just the month, make your third tag the month and year. So instead of one tag being just July, it should be July2009 (no space).

2) We're adding a fourth tag to help the search results even more: The theme. This month, your fourth tag will be Ripples.

So this month, tag your photos with these four tags:
     Boston.com
     contest
     July2009
     Ripples

Remember, one entry per photographer. The deadline is midnight July 31. Here's more about how to enter.

  1. ahhh, I was wondering how you were going to differentiate the months as the contest went into its second year.

  1. time to put my thinking cap on.

looking forward to seeing the entries this month, I think the theme will lend itself to a great variety of shots.

  1. I may be slow here, but what does it mean to "tag" a photo?

Posted by SD July 8, 09 12:57 PM
  1. Hi, SD -- Tags is just another name for keywords. You add keywords, or tags, to your photo so that it can be categorized or found in certain searches. You can do the same thing to other types of content, too, depending on the software -- blog entries, for example.

In this case, when you set up a Flickr account and upload photos, you'll see in the right column that there is a link to add tags. Once you add the tags, then I'll be able to find all the contest photos by searching for those specific tags.

  1. Hi John A. - Teresa is on vacation this week, but she says the photo can be taken anywhere in the universe!

  1. Hi. Newbie here. If I've correctly tagged my picture in Flickr and saved it, is that all I need to do to enter the contest? Is any further action on my part required? Thanks, and I look forward to all the wonderful photography and contests!

  1. Hi, I'm new here and it looks really interesting so I would like to participate, but I have a couple of questions. Can the pictures be edited (post processed) on an editing software? Can the pictures be taken using HDR images? Thanks for answering.

  1. Hi wijagoro ... yes, photos can be post-processed. And yes, HDR images are also fine. Welcome to RAW ...

  1. Hi, When does voting start ?

  1. My photo isn't in the galleries for this month. It's on page 8 of the Flickr search but was tagged later in the month.

  1. There seems to be a little hitch with Gallery 4 loading, at least for me. It doesn't give the full screen option with the July contest heading like the others. Also, it only shows 47 photos not 50 like Galleries 1-3. Might just be my computer but FYI, in case it's a glitch.

  1. Hi Lisa - I just finished adding the rest of the contest photos to our galleries. There are five galleries now, and you can find them all linked here. Hopefully yours is there; if not, please leave another comment and we'll investigate.

Hi Bean - Thanks for the heads up. Gallery 4 only had 47 photos because, as of Friday, that's how many photos were left after Galleries 1-3 were created. The last gallery doesn't always have an even 50. I added more photos this morning, so now Gallery 4 has 50 photos, and we've added Gallery 5. Not sure what the load issue was, but we appreciate the note!

    Thanks all!

  1. What's going on with the contest? Did I miss the voting?

  1. I'm still trying to reach the judge for this month's voting. Once she narrows the field to the final 50, I'll post the Voting Machine. Hang tight.
