Globe critique: This student is eager to learn
Colleen McQuaid of Pembroke first became interested in photography after sneaking a few shots with a camera her mother received as a birthday present. She told us she "instantly fell in love with taking pictures” and “learned to really appreciate photography."
She was planning to take a digital photography course at her high school this fall when it was abruptly canceled. So instead, she's hoping to get some advice and tips for improvement in a critique by a Boston Globe photographer.

Head2Head Review:
Nikon D3X vs. Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

By Patrick Singleton
Head2Head Reviews
Introduction: The Matchup
The two most expensive DSLRs from Canon and Nikon are notable mainly for their pixel counts.
The Canon 1Ds Mark III and the Nikon D3X record 21.1 and 24.5 megapixels, respectively. The file sizes may seem enormous to most photographers; they strain the limits of the cameras' processors and data arteries. The cameras' large files make 2GB memory cards look puny, and clog hard drives. DVD backup schemes begin to look clumsy.

Photographer of the Week: Randy Brogen

Canon EOS 5D, 1/250, f/5.6, 285mm, ISO 400
By Randy Brogen
Burlington
I took up photography about six years ago as a hobby just before my son was born. I had always been interested in taking pictures, but my lack of patience for the development process was enough to keep me sidelined. Worse yet was dealing with the chemicals if you wanted to develop the pictures yourself.
Then came the digital revolution...

Don't remove your tags!
There are two Final 50 August contest photos missing from the Voting Machine.
We use Flickr's API to pull your photos into the VM, so please do not remove your contest tags, and please make sure that all of the boxes on this page are UNchecked: http://www.flickr.com/account/prefs/optout/
We'll give those photographers until noon today to fix their photos/accounts, but then we're going to open voting with or without their photos.

The August contest's Final 50
Sorry, folks, but we can't post the Voting Machine yet because as happens every month, some of the finalists have incorrect settings on their Flickr accounts that are preventing us from using Flickr's API to pull their photos into the VM.
I've sent them emails via their Flickr accounts; as soon as they fix things we should be good to go.
Our judge for our August "Architecture" competition, Bruno Debas, has finished choosing the 50 photos from among all the submissions. His comments:
