Meet the September contest judge

Posted by Teresa Hanafin, Boston.com Staff October 6, 2009 08:35 AM

We have a judge for the September "Jobs" contest: Glen Cooper, an award-winning Boston photojournalist who also has a wedding photography business and teaches at the New England School of Photography.

As a professional photojournalist for more than 10 years, Glen has worked all over the world, including in Bosnia during their bloody civil war, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Eastern Europe, Iceland, The Azores, Canada, and all over the United States.

He is the director of visual journalism at NESOP, where each year he takes his students to Guatemala to work with various relief organizations producing documentary projects. He also runs overseas workshops that are open to the public (alas, his November trip to India is full).

Glen's work has appeared in the Globe, the Herald, USA Today, Marie Claire, and Brides Magazine, and has been distributed worldwide through wire services such as The Associated Press and Getty Images. He contributed to Chris Price's book on the New England Patriots, The Blueprint.

In addition, Glen and his wife, Asha, run a successful wedding photography business, Decisive Moment Photojournalists, and he is starting a photography program for at-risk youths with the Boston Police Department.

He is a member of the National Press Photographers Association and the Wedding Photojournalists Association.

Glen earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in journalism, both from Boston University. He served as photo editor for the Boston Metro and as chief visual journalist at BostonNOW.

He lives in the Boston area with his wife and two young daughters, and is working on a book and short documentary about their road trip through Mexico and Central America last summer (check out their blog with photos from the trip at Traveling Family Circus).

I thought Glen's combination of photojournalism experience and teaching background made him a perfect judge for the Jobs contest. You can see some of Glen's work at Glen Cooper Photography, Visual Reportage, and Decisive Moment Photojournalists.

Contest update: We'll post full-screen galleries of your September entries in a day or two.

NOVEMBER'S THEME Silhouettes

Convey emotion, set a mood, or create an air of mystery ... silhouettes can convey a lot in a handful of pixels. It's a challenging theme; position your subject in front of a light source, and expose for the light. One rule: Your photo must be taken this month.
