A Project 52?
I've been trying to think of ways to get more of your photos posted on RAW for all the world to see -- well, at least for our world to see. I've hit on an idea, but I need your opinion and suggestions.
I'm sure most of you have heard about Project 365 ... a way some photographers challenge themselves to improve by taking a photograph every single day for a year.
We highlighted the Project 365 of one of our loyal RAW Dawgs, Pat Glennon, more than a year ago. And Flickr has several groups organized around the concept; here's one of the biggest.
I happen to think that taking a photo every single day, while noble, is a tough commitment to keep. So I thought of launching a Project 52 -- every Monday, calling for your single best photo of the previous week. We'd post a different gallery every week.
We are close to launching a Groups application on Boston.com, and I might wait for that to launch this. But in the meantime, what do you think of the idea?

I think it is a good idea. I've done the daily blog thing and I found that you end up publishing photo's you normally wouldn't. Doing this once a week will work a lot better in my opinion. I'll participate once this starts.
I like this idea too. I'm just getting started with more "serious amateur" photography and would love the structure of this "52 project" to keep me focused. ( pun intended! )
I think it is a great idea. I have been trying to follow Pat's idea but with work and family commitments it is difficult to take a photograph every single day...however once a week may be more doable! I will definitely participate.
I think the 52 is much better and more likely to maintain participation than the 365...
Fantastic idea!
Great idea and when do I start?
I'm keen to the idea and may participate as well; but I would also like to see some additional participation by those who take part in this.
Rather than just make it a "Dump n' Run" for photographers to drop photos on a weekly basis, require photographers who add a photo to leave one or two comments on others' photos.
That's just an example, something...to inspire; I'm guessing that I'm wanting something different other that what you could get from a typical flickr group; something that would help photographers improve, compete, receive critiques, vote or a combination thereof.
If it's a dump and run scenario, I most likely would not participate. You already have something like that with the "Photo Challenge" forum.
Hope this input helps spin some wheels.
i think it is a great idea, and not so hard to commit to as 365. i'm in!
Here's an idea: How about asking each person for a quick paragraph about their photo, too. Tell us why, or how, or something else of interest.
Or perhaps there could be some way to have a featured shooter for the week, picked from all those who participated the week prior. That person could submit a mini profile or something similar.
With a 365, as Paul said, you wind up publishing photos you might not otherwise, but the idea of the project is not to produce art every day; it's about chronicling the year. Some days are shoot ... post ... move on.
This, for me, will not be a replacement for a 365, but a different effort altogether. I may wind up using a photo that I didn't even post to my blog as time goes on.
Long story short: I'll play along.
I like the idea but would it be possible to have a "catch up" period for each week ... I would hate to start it and then forget or be traveling when it was time to upload for that week and not be able to. Maybe a rolling upload and critiques at the end of each quarter: "make sure all your photos are in for the last few weeks - shooting dates must be with the correct week" or the like ....
Sounds like fun and will provide the discipline that I certainly can use. I'm in... I think...
Solid idea to keep people coming back to RAW. Fresh work is always good at all times, and we might stumble on a masterpiece using this method. Second, maybe we should create a individual 52 file on Flickr. Then, at the end of the year, pick 12 of the most interesting streams. No structure; just the best photos of the week in one's opinion. This would also make it easy for you to search our work, as well keeping this album together.
Sounds like a great idea! I would love to participate.
Excellent. I don't have the time to do a photo every day, but once a week, that is doable and still pushes us to take more pictures.
My daughter was born on September 1, 2009 and I have taken a picture of her every day. The problem is that I use smugmug. Why does RAW only use FLICKR? I don't like the idea that Flicker ownes my pictures forever after I upload them...
Let's DO it! Great idea, count me in. Peace D
I agree with Warner. Great idea, but we can make it even greater!
Teresa, is this one of your new year's resolutions?
This will definitely allow more dawgs to show their photos. I support any way to solicit showing and critiquing of work, as long as they are NOT contests. (You have heard that from me before :-) Not sure how popular the phone photos turned out, but that would be along the same idea.
Encouraging everyone to chime with their critiques instead of asking for a single judge's will make it less "threatening".
Broadcasting the call outside of this blog, e.g. at flickr, craigslist, etc. may draw more attention.
One more time, get rid of those ridiculous terms of use.
I've already started and am two weeks in. You can check out my Project 52 at my blog: http://www.citadelarts.com
Let me know what you think.
If the project is oriented towards monochrome images, I would be willing to publish a weekly blog at 52MONOCHROME to help the RAW community get their images published in other mediums and further their exposure on flickr.
I could work with the RAW community to provide a weekly blog about a prized selected image submitted each week and maybe even a plug about the photographer whom submitted a fantastic image!
I would be willing to provide some links to such a forum from my blog as well if this is something you may like. Just some more ideas!
I like the idea. I've never jumped into the 365 groups, because even if I take pictures everyday, I just have too much else going on to post them. One a week is doable.
One a week is a great idea and OK with me. I also would like a short "how and why" description of the shot.
Is project 52 in addition to the monthly contest? I like the monthly contest but would also enjoy participating in Project 52
An excellent idea. I've been taking part in Project 365 but have already missed a few days. I concur with previous posts on pictures being used which would otherwise not make the cut. Weekly would be very doable. Daily is very difficult to keep up with particularly during the work week. Can either keep theme completely open or do a different theme each week (although additional work for you or other administrator to make decision and post in advance). I also like the idea of encouraging (but not mandating) comments on the pictures.
I would participate in this once/week project. Having completed a 365 in 2009, I am much more interested in trying for quality more than quantity.
I happen to like themes... if you decide to go that route.
Great idea, I think I will 52.........of course not 365...
Congratulations.........
