Look back over the past year -- the contest entries, Globe critiques, Photo Challenges, the number of you who have started to exhibit your work -- and it's clear that you're making great strides with your photography.

So let's celebrate!

Look through your photo files and find the single best photo that you shot during 2009. The theme or subject doesn't matter. The only criteria is that you took it this year.

Be choosy: We want only your absolute best.

Upload it to the gallery linked below. Then feel free to post comments on others' photos or click the Recommend link.

We'll accept your submissions until midnight Jan. 31.

  1. I'm noticing some folks are posting more then one photo. One person has posted about six. They are great shots, but posting a bunch goes against the spirit of this gallery, IMHO...

  1. Yeah, JB, some folks read right over the directions and just plunge in ... I deleted some multiples yesterday and will look them over again today ... thanks for the heads up.

  1. Is there a way to see the shots in full-screen? They get displayed in a fairly small format, it would be good to see a larger image. Nothing more frustrating than seeing a nice landscape in a tiny image.

  1. Is the deadline January 31st or December 31st? Thanks.

  1. Ah, Dan -- just click on the first thumbnail to launch a slideshow.

  1. The deadline is Jan. 31. I want to give people time to look through their 2009 photos. And it's not a contest; just a showcase.

  1. The submit page DID have a button to "Upload Another." It seemed to have no limit.

  1. Are all rights are retained by the photographer, or is the Globe entitled to any use beyond one time publication rights?

Thanks, and Happy New Year to everyone.

  1. Hi Teresa,
I uploaded more than 1 photo after looking all over this portion of the site for rules against it. After seeing NOTHING that says you can't post multiples, I posted 3. Also, when I went to upload, there were multiple photo "upload" links for people to continue browsing their computers for more photos. How can you get people like me more aware that we are only supposed to post 1? Maybe a visible rule, etc.

  1. Sorry Teresa, I meant those images that get displayed during the slideshow or just clicking on an image. The displayed image is still kind of small. Most of the photo websites have an option to display the image either in full-screen mode or in the original size.

There's some good shots in there!

  1. what if you want to change your photo?

  1. OK, let me tackle all the questions and comments in one big reply:

Richard and KGibb: I tried to make it clear that I wanted just one photo per photographer; sorry if I didn't. Two teases on the front page of RAW both refer to "your single best image." The name of the gallery is Your Best Photo (singular). In the text above, third paragraph, I wrote, "...find the single best photo that you shot during 2009..." And on the gallery page, there is another reminder: "Celebrate the improvement in your photography this year by posting the single best photo you took during 2009."

I know the photo uploader allows for more than one upload, but that's because it's a universal widget for all user galleries. We can't tailor it for a one-off situation like this, I'm afraid.

Paul: You should be able to get access to the slideshow by clicking on the first thumbnail on the gallery page. It's not automatic; you have to keep hitting the Next button. Let me know if you keep having trouble.

Lyman: By submitting your photo to us, you are granting us a royalty-free license in perpetuity to use your photo in this gallery as well for any other editorial or marketing purposes. For example, every Wednesday we print a photo from RAW in the G section of the Globe. And if we ever developed house ads to promote RAW in the paper, we might use some of the photos submitted here. However, you retain the rights to your photos and we will not use them for any commercial purposes, such as compiling them in a book (wouldn't that be nice!) and selling them without first asking your permission and working out some sort of compensation.

Jill and Moe: I'm afraid once you've uploaded a photo to a public gallery, you can't edit or remove it. Just upload another one and shoot me an email at raw@boston.com asking me to delete the first one.

Dan: Yeah, we display the images at 737 px wide so we can fit a narrow ad in the right column. We're working on designing new galleries; this display is the out-of-the-box look from the company that hosts the photo widgets.

  1. Yes, that would be nice!

  1. Teresa,
I don't know if Dan & Paul are still having problems, but I can't start a slide show. Clicking on a thumbnail image enlarges the pictures, but then, ... nothing. There is no "next" button anywhere on my computer screen. I have tried to do this from both my home computer and work computer. The only thing I can click on after the picture enlarges is "return to gallery page". I have no problem at all with the slideshow of the December Toys gallery. Why does one work and the other doesn't?
    Thanks.

  1. Thanks for the heads up, Karen. For some reason, the Previous and Next navigation links show up in Firefox, but not in IE. I've just filed a ticket with our tech dept. for someone to look into it ASAP.

The Toys galleries are in a different type of slideshow.

Life and wildlife in Madagascar
For years before I started college, I knew I wanted to spend a semester studying abroad, but I wasn't sure where. By my junior year at Brandeis, I made up my mind to travel somewhere off the beaten path, and, of course, Madagascar is pretty far off the beaten path for someone like me....
