And the winner is ...

Sara, who wrote, "I think this is a layer of (olive? veggie?) oil on water ... probably in a holographic container that is relatively flat due to clarity. The oil has been stirred to call separate circles and different sizes."

That was the closest guess, Carl said: "It is olive oil on water and I've used some holographic wrapping paper to provide the background colours!"

Carl shot this photo with a Samsung GX10 using an exposure of 1/20 sec. at f/8, ISO 100, and a focal length of 105mm.

  1. Oil droplets in water. I'm guessing that the colors come from internal reflection due to the thinness of the film. There are air bubbles in the oil drops - perhaps the mixture was prepared on a microscope slide with a coverslip on top?
