The photographers have looked over the guesses, we've had some discussions about those guesses, and now it's time to reveal the names of the 10 people who came the closest to correctly identifying the subject of the Top 10 winning photos in our January "What's That?" contest. It was quite challenging, and some of the guesses were very entertaining.

The links below will take you to the separate entries for each of the Top 10 finishers where I have posted the names of the winners and a note from each photographer.

RAW Mug and Thumb Drive
We will send each of the 10 winning guessers a super-cool RAW insulated mug and a RAW 256MB thumb drive - the greatest prizes ever!

*** IMPORTANT DETAIL!!! Even if you made guesses on multiple photos, you were eligible to win just one guessing game. My goal was to have a different winner for each photo. ***

Here are the photo entries:

First Place | Second Place | Third Place | Fourth Place | Fifth Place

Sixth Place | Seventh Place | Eighth Place | Ninth Place | Tenth Place

Here's a look back at the Final 40 finishers, as well as the first gallery of all of the entries. Use the links across the top to navigate to the other galleries.

A reminder: The February "Loving Portraits" contest is open.

  1. Way to ruin a great contest, Boston.com. I'd be especially tweaked if I was the first one to guess "martini glass", but you took "martini glass with blue base" over it. That first guess nailed it. You'd have to be completely color blind to not get the "blue" part, so I'm with the first guesser ... it was unnecessary to mention it.

As I said before, I feel the open-ended subject matter of a "What is it?" themed contest resulted in the best outcome yet. I haven't been a big fan of the judging on a lot of the specific-themed contests, but a wide-open category like this kind of lends itself to unbiased judging, imho. I think you should repeat this theme regularly.

  1. Um, SF48, the photographers chose the winners, not Boston.com. I think they all made good choices.

This theme was so popular that I'm thinking of doing it every January.

  1. Yeah, my apologies for taking the whole thing a bit too seriously here. I never have been a big fan of guessing games. My bad.

I'd love to see this theme more than once a year. It just lends itself to the most wonderful pictures overall, I think.

Thanks for all your effort, Teresa. It's a monumental task, and we can all just sit back and watch. I've derived a lot of enjoyment from RAW since its inception. May it last and prosper.

  1. No apologies needed. I appreciate -- and recognize -- the passion of everyone who's involved in this obsession of ours. I wouldn't have it any other way.
