I came across a cool Flickr group: The Items We Carry. The criteria for that group is simple, and one I'll adopt for this contest: Take a photo of the most commonly found items in your pockets or on your person, arranged.

However, I will break with that group's rules in one aspect: The admin of that group, Naz Hamid (absenter on Flickr), doesn't want photos of the contents of pocketbooks unless you're a woman who wears clothes that don't have pockets. However, I'll take the contents of purses or pockets. The items just have to be things that you actually carry with you every day.

I've been asked (see below) if one could photograph something like a hat. I prefer that the items you shoot be things that you carry, not wear. One of the points of the contest is for your photos to tell others something about yourself by displaying items from your pockets and purses that usually are hidden. Think of these photos as revelatory as well as riveting.

These are set-up shots. You can focus on just one item if it's a compelling shot, but try your hand at arranging several things in such a way that makes for an interesting composition.

Even though I overslept this month and we've lost two days, I think this is an easy enough assignment that we can re-instate the rule that your photo must be taken this month.

Here are the contest tags; just copy and paste this string of tags into the tags field in the right column of your Flickr photo page: contest March2010 ItemsWeCarry

Also make sure that your photos are not hidden from Flickr's search by unchecking all the boxes on this page, and make sure that we can see your photos.

If this is your first time entering, here are details about how to enter as well as the rules governing our contests.

Have fun with this one ... and good luck.

Life and wildlife in Madagascar
For years before I started college, I knew I wanted to spend a semester studying abroad, but I wasn't sure where. By my junior year at Brandeis, I made up my mind to travel somewhere off the beaten path, and, of course, Madagascar is pretty far off the beaten path for someone like me....

Now that it's been several months since I returned from a week-long Rebirth Workshop in Mississippi, I'm happy to look back and provide an overview of what we did that made it such an intense experience for me as a photographer....
