First Place, NNL 2009 photo contest

Got a note from our friend Jonathan Parker, park ranger at the Lowell National Historical Park, telling us about another nature-related photo contest that's going on -- this one involving all 586 National Natural Landmarks, of which there are 11 in Massachusetts.

The organizers of the National Natural Landmarks Program's 7th annual photo contest are looking for images "that highlight the significant natural features" of the designated landmarks.

You can enter up to three images, as long as each image is taken at a different landmark.

Print, digital, and slide formats will be accepted, and must be postmarked or e-mailed by June 30.

The service will announce the winners in September, and the top 13 winning photos will be featured in the service's 2011 calendar (the 13 images featured on the service's 2010 calendar aren't eligible). Special recognition will be given to the photos that finish first, second, and third. That's a nice perk: More than 8,000 copies of this year's calendar were distributed nationwide.

Here are links to the designated natural landmarks in each state:

Massachusetts | Rhode Island | New Hampshire | Maine | Vermont | Conn.

Here are the official rules and entry form. Please let us know if you enter!
