Abolitionist and clergyman Henry Highland Garnet addressed the National Convention of Colored Citizens in 1843 with these words: “Rather die freemen than live to be slaves . . . let your motto be resistance. . .’’ This is the theme for “Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits,’’ a traveling photographic exhibit presented by the Museum of African American History and the Smithsonian Institution.
