Gmlaw: "Why do we assume that every soon-to-be free agent is "destined to leave," as if we're some small market team. " Name the last Sox good, prime-of-career player going into free agency that staye more »

Terrible trade. Rubby or Webster will take off and blossom one of these years very soon. Miley is rubbish. What are they thinking? more »

This is an absolute giveaway. Makes no sense at all. When you are a seller of good "merchandise" at the trading deadline you're supposed to be getting a good return, in fact, you should be getting, if more »

You guys watch. Ben isn't going to sell. He'll try to sell the fanbase on winning/playoffs THIS year. You read it here first. more »

Pegnva, Farrell isn't lucky to my mind, but he did win a championship last year...that'll buy him exponentially more rope than the length of leash Valentine was on, as Bobby has won eff-all. more »

Me neither. The intangibles thing sounds laughingly like the last days of Jason Varitek, long after he was effective. To me he's the one to go. more »

JBJ played a lot of right last year in spring training, and impressed mightily there. Excellent suggestion, Cordeau

Bill Walton 1986. Here it comes. What a steal!

Just to pile on a bit, everyone is ignoring that in addition to the Tigers, the Indians also had to face another very good team this year 18 times..the Royals.
Posted 11/13/2013 04:40:58 EST
That would be the Royals, not the Astros. Big difference, this year.

We as Sox fans had a rare chance to experience close-up the managing styles of both the top two contenders for this award. For me, it's hands-down obvious that Farrell is actually the better manager, more »

This was an excellent column by Nick, really well rounded. I like that he compared Ben to Brian Sabean, because this team's chemistry feels a lot to me like that of the Giants that won those two Serie more »

"...any way Clay and Doubront could double team"....in a possible Game 7 that is. Throw Clay out there for 3-4 innings, then Felix bridges to Taz/Lester/Koji.

Not a bad idea, Despry. Nobody has mentioned this, but if I were Farrell, I'd see if there's any way Clay and Doubront could double team the way they did in Game 4 instead of Peavy. The series has to more »

Rick, the ride for me started on April 1. The whole season has been fantastic, as I'm sure you'd agree. Can't wait to celebrate. GO SOXXXXXXX!!!!

I wept at the end of the game, watching the announcer-free highlights roll (check out the ESPN feed if you don't like Buck and McCarver; it's better, if not Orsillo and Eck)....just SO PROUD OF THESE more »

What is it with the supposed best shortstops in baseball paving the way towards a world championship for the Sox? Iglesias waved us in to the Series by botching that double play grounder in Game 6 tha more »

One of the silliest teapot tempests in recent Globe Sports memory, and that's saying a lot.

Doubront has way more upside than Thorton from the left side, even if he hasn't been as spot on as he had been earlier. It's a no brainer, leave Thornton off.

Nice article, Dan, nice ending too that made me laugh. God I loved hearing Ned say that.

I had a chance to listen to Scully on Friday night for the 2-0 loss. At first I wasn't sure who I was listening to, but it eventually dawned on me, not having heard him call a game before. It was an i more »

Sorry, JP is not "elite" anymore, regardless of his elite past. His 4+ ERA since 2008 makes him the equivalent of a less-durable Dempster.

Instead of Iggy and Drew we'll have Middlebrooks and Holt. Ugh.
Posted 07/31/2013 01:52:41 EDT
I don't like this trade. Peavy is always on the DL. We get a part-time sometimes decent pitcher...not elite...for an up and coming defensive whiz. I have to agree with vohanep
