And Charlie...half a million people in Bristol County are waiting for a chance to share the Bahlkes' frustration with commuter rail so they can take advantage of the jobs in the Boston area, too.

Thanks for the fairness and truth in this piece. Unions continue to be the only countervailing power resisting the conversion of the US to 'banana republic' status.

The best detergent for this mess is the labor movement.

A good first step would be to expand Social Security.

Good balance in this piece. Rare when there is so much 1% hysteria about "austerity", or why we must take money from poor, elderly widows.

Greater inequality is directly related to lower union density.

Union density and the middle class share of aggregate income are directly related.

The Pioneer Institute is not simply a "policy think tank". It is a "right wing think tank".

But...the vast and underutilized economic potential of Gateway Cities New Bedford and Fall River will never be realized without a real connection to the Metro Boston region.

Another example of Boston-centric thinking! And why Western and Southeastern Massachusetts can be so alienated from the crowd In the capital city!

Wrong about the Pioneer Institute. It is a right wing "stink tank" masquerading as a "nonpartisan research organization". To imply the latter is to be inaccurate and taints the impartiality of the pie more »

The best antibiotic for inequality: a union card.

Smashed a union in PA.

I'm so glad my cable company (Comcast), which I love, was able to help out this deserving man! I can only hope that the cost of my 'bundle' with the "Big C" helped contribute to this wonderful and ju more »

Sounds like a good model for Globe columnists, too. How about $10 per column for the last 3 months of the year? Might be a slightly excessive price for some columns, though.

Just one more skirmish in the war over inequality. More important to know are the willingly oblivious hotel owners.

The Pioneer Institute is not a "think tank". It is a "right wing, corporate backed Think Tank". Please be careful with your terminology.

This would be funny if it wasn't such a tragedy for the teachers...and the kids.

We better prepare ourselves for the following headline: "Business owners claim religious objection to cancer treatment."

Too bad the expensive investment in the Old Colony line isn't put to use on the weekends like some others. Even during the holidays, really?
