Kimberly Roberts of East Boston won first place in the Porch, Balcony, Deck or Window Box Garden category in Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s annual Mayor’s Garden Contest.

Have you noticed the remarkably bright and beautifully gardens along the streets of Boston lately? Then you’ve probably passed one of the more than 130 private residences entered in the 2013 Mayor’s Garden Contest. The annual competition, which is celebrating its 17th year, awards those who have gardened and landscaped to help beautify Boston’s neighborhoods. First place winners in nine categories received the coveted “Golden Trowel” award from Mayor Thomas M. Menino at a recent reception at Suffolk University.

For the first time, the Boston Parks & Recreation Commissioner Antonia Pollak also
presented the Community Beautification Service Award, which went to The Friends of East Boston Greenway, whose efforts this season included planting 75 trees, 10,000 day lilies, and 1,500 tulips and daffodils.
The judges for the contest were Boston Elderly Affairs Commissioner Emily Shea, AARP Massachusetts State Director Mike Festa, select members of the Boston Department Garden Contest Hall of Fame, the Boston Parks & Recreation Department staff, and members of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
