Expanding Your Tequila Horizons

Chances are that if you are into tequila, you’ve had a decent margarita somewhere—or maybe you enjoy a good old shot with salt and a lime wedge, but the story ends there.

Unfortunately, tequila is just one of those spirits that people pursue with a fervency or avoid altogether.

As the agave lovers out there celebrate National Tequila Day on July 24th, here are a few cocktails, some new world and a couple classics, that are frequently overlooked or somewhat undiscovered.

Note: Mezcal makes an appearance in a few of the drinks, after all, tequila is a style of mezcal, and it should always share the stage with its cousin.

Paloma: Two ounces reposado tequila, three ounces white grapefruit juice, a half ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, a half ounce agave nectar, sea salt, club soda.

Shake well with cracked ice and strain into an ice-filled collins glass rimmed with sea salt. Garnish with the lime wheel and top with a splash of club soda.

Rosita: One and a half ounces reposado tequila, a half ounce sweet vermouth, a half ounce dry vermouth, a half ounce Campari, one dash Angostura bitters.

Stir ingredients in shaker with ice cubes, strain into a glass filled with cracked ice and garnish with a lemon twist

El Diablo: One and a half ounces reposado tequila, a half ounce crème de cassis, a half ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, two to three ounces ginger beer.

Combine all ingredients, except ginger beer, and shake well. Fine-strain into an ice-filled Collins glass, top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.

Latin Trifecta: One ounce blanco tequila, one ounce of Cynar, a half ounce Oloroso sherry, three dashes Angostura orange bitters.

Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a flamed orange twist. —Jamie Boudreau

Oaxaca Old Fashioned: One and a half ounces reposado tequila, one half ounce mezcal, one teaspoon agave nectar, two dashes Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters.

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir well to chill, and strain into glass filled with ice. Twist an orange peel over the glass and use as a garnish.

Maximilian Affair: One ounce blanco tequila, one ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur, one half ounce Punt e Mes, one half ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Combine ingredients in a shaker. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a lemon twist. —Misty Kalkofen

Naked and Famous: Three quarter ounces mezcal, three quarter ounces yellow Chartreuse, three quarter ounces Aperol, three quarter ounces freshly squeezed lime juice.

Combine ingredients in a shake filled with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. —Joaquin Simo
