Meryl Streep has taken on the role of legends in the past, so we aren’t surprised to hear that she’ll reportedly be playing iconic opera singer Maria Callas in an HBO adaptation of “Master Class.’’

If Page Six has it right (they’re reporting it as an exclusive), Streep will play the central role in the stage-to-screen remake of the Tony Award-winning play, which made its Broadway debut in 1995. The production will be directed by Mike Nichols.

“Master Class’’ tells the story of Callas as she lived in 1971, when she taught students at The Juilliard School and had a love affair with Aristotle Onassis.

Callas was an operatic soprano who died an untimely death in 1977 at the age of 53 after suffering a heart attack at her home in Paris. She was described in a Raymond Ericson-written New York Times obituary as “the most exciting opera singer of her time.’’

Zoe Caldwell, Patti Lupone, and Tyne Daly have each played Callas in stage productions of “Master Class.’’

HBO has yet to comment on the Page Six report, according to BroadwayWorld.com.
