Do you know where your passport is?

Steven Fuller does. He posted this photo of his passport on Instagram:

But we wonder, does he know that some countries may not let him in if his passport has less than six months of validity before it expires?

September is National Passport Awareness Month, a month dedicated to educating American travelers about their passports. And since the amount of passports issued to Americans has nearly doubled over the past decade, according to the government, American travelers can probably use the pointers.

Here are some quick passport facts.

Passports for adults are valid for 10 years and passports for minors (children under age 16) are valid for five years. You’ll usually get your passport four to six weeks after you apply. If you need a passport in a hurry, you can obtain one in as little as three weeks (for an extra $60). You just need to request it by mail or in person. However, you must apply in person if you are applying for your first passport ever, if your previous passport was stolen, or if your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago. Don’t know where to go? Look up a passport agency near you.

Wondering how much your new passport will cost? It depends on the type of passport you request and how quickly you need it, but be prepared to pay at least $100. Use this handy fee calculator to see how much your bill will come to.

Have you put a lot of thought into how many pages your passport has? You should. That’s because certain countries require that your passport has two to four blank visa/stamp pages. For example, Italy requires that you have two blank pages for that country’s entry stamp. Standard passport books have 28 pages. Of those, 17 are blank and used for visas and country entry/exit stamps. If you are a frequent traveler, you can request a larger passport book with 52 pages. You can have pages added to your passport as well.

Have more questions?

You can apply for a passport and get your questions answered at special events taking place around New England this month. In Massachusetts, Passport Day is Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boston Passport Agency in the Tip O’Neill Federal Building at 10 Causeway Street in Boston.
