Trevor Noah to Northeastern: ‘You guys have officially turned college into prison’

After Northeastern University announced that university police officers would be equipped with semiautomatic rifles during emergencies, students, Boston City Councilors, and the Boston Police Department raised concerns about the controversial plan. On Thursday, Daily Show host Trevor Noah jumped into the conversation, mocking the plan as part of what he sees as America’s backwards response to recent mass shootings.

“Not everyone thinks that the answer is more guns, some people think that the answer is bigger guns,’’ Noah said, just before the screen cut to a shot of Northeastern’s campus.

In response to growing worries about mass shootings on college campuses, the Northeastern University Police Department made public their plan to use semiautomatic weapons in emergency situations. The weapons would be deployed in officers’ vehicles during in times of high-level threats, such as an active on-campus shooter scenario, officials from the department have said.

“Hm, so now students can go to a place where they live for years, eating s— meals, spending most of the time sharing a tiny room with a stranger, experimenting with same-sex relationships, all while a group of guards patrol with AR-15s,’’ the host quipped. “You guys have officially turned college into prison.’’
